I'm thrilled to announce that the biography I am currently writing on Tina Modotti has been acquired by Yale University Press: "Art as a Weapon: Tina Modotti and the Mexican Cultural Renaissance," a new look at the cinematic life of the influential 20th-century photographer, from her beginnings as an Italian immigrant and Hollywood silent film actress to her later years as a communist activist and Soviet agent in the Spanish Civil War, with a focus on the period in 1920s Mexico City when Modotti joined a group of artists including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and Edward Weston who married art and politics in the intellectual ferment following the Mexican Revolution.(coming 2026)

The poets of Resistencia explore feminist, queer, indigenous, urban, and ecological themes alongside historically prominent protests against imperialism, dictatorships, and economic inequality. Within this momentous collection, poets representing every Latin American country grapple with identity, place, and belonging, resisting easy definitions to render a nuanced and complex portrait of language in rebellion.Praise for Resistencia: "Resistencia could not be more timely. It is a stunning collection of revelations and witness...Indispensable."– Luis Alberto Urrea"A groundbreaking collection of works by over 50 poets, Resistencia is alive with bravery, feminism, strength, agency, protest, power and hope."– Ms. Magazine"The poems in Resistencia do not soothe but shake us awake, and they call on us to do what they have done: to witness, to listen, to not only speak but sing."– Maggie Smith"Exactly the kind of book this world needs more of....This is a must-read."— Bookmarks, Most Anticipated Poetry Collections for Fall 2020"A poetic manual for resistance has arrived....Resistencia's dream team of translators has spectacularly rendered this polyglot volume into a vibrant whole while also making it approachable for newcomers to Latin American literature. As a poetic primer in the language and tradition of protest, it is essential."– Seven Dayshttps://redpoppy.net/resistencia.html Show less

His name and legacy have become almost synonymous with liberation movements, and with the language of erotic love. He is beloved by Chilean railroad workers as well as Taylor Swift. Yet few know much about the flesh-and-blood man behind the poems. Through lyrical filmmaking, we aim to bring this towering literary figure to a broader audience, in a captivatingly entertaining fashion. We are building on an original version that first screened in 2004, narrated by Isabel Allende. It won awards and was widely praised, but has so much more potential, so much to update. After a long hiatus, it screened at the Brooklyn Public Library's 2019 LitFilm Festival, generating a very positive response from the engaged audience. This project will show the complete Neruda: the redeeming and the cruel sides of his personal life story, the inspirational and troublesome sides of his politics, and how his poetry ties into it all.In the end, through a documentary film as rich and accessible as his best-loved works, we hope to show viewers that, at the heart of it all, Neruda’s poetry is simply about the wonder of being human. And that poetry can be so much more than pretty words on paper; it is an essential part of the fabric of human existence, one that mirrors culture and plays a role in shaping it. I successfully communicated these themes to readers in my recent book, "Neruda: The Biography of a Poet," a finalist for the PEN Prize for Biography. Now I am turning my focus back to the film and am seeking to build a new team. I'm looking for EPs, producers, directors, or production companies to join it.Please contact me if interested in any way, including supporting the film through tax-deductible donations. Thank you.
