As the Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, MarKel was responsible for growing the distribution capability of key Franklin capacities to outside partners. Specifically, he focused on the commercialization of BlueQuill, the University proprietary Learning Management System, and distribution of its degree program content. Under his leadership, Franklin University's Learning Solutions implemented both technology and content for more than 20 Universities throughout Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East generating more than $12MM in new revenue.

As Chief Information Officer, MarKel was responsible for the strategic planning and operational support for each of the Columbus Metropolitan Library's 22 branch locations across Central Ohio. Highlights of his tenure with the Library include: setting the vision for the innovations introduced in two of the Library's newly renovated branches (Driving Park and Whitehall); completing the Library's migration to a new ERP, Polaris; and inverting the organization's technology support model to improve the reliability of key Library services made available to the public.

MarKel served as the Director of Academic Information Services. In this role, he led the technology organization responsible for creating and delivering cinematic productions, custom web applications, and educational games. The job was a blend of technical expertise and business strategy where MarKel serves as the Chief Architect, engineering solutions using primarily Java (J2EE), PHP, CSS, JavaScript, and HTML running in an Apache, Red Hat Linux, JBOSS, and mySQL environment. On the business strategy side, MarKel was an integral part of the University's online growth initiatives. Running an organization that fluctuated between 15 and 20 FTEs, MarKel was tasked with executing the Academic Information Technology strategy across all of the University’s 39-degree programs distributed across its 3 Colleges. This work included managing priorities and expectations across both Administration and Academics through guided governance; working closely with the University’s Executive Leadership team to ensure that resourcing levels are appropriate to deliver the expected work; and developing his organization in anticipation of where the University is moving to compete in the market place.

At GotGame Media, MarKel invented a predictive modeling algorithm and social network that helped college coaches around the nation find and recruit high school athletes that would have the greatest impact on their respective sports programs. His work as the Founder of this organization was focused on building out a scalable web crawling/screen scraping infrastructure and ETL programming interface that collected and fed data into the organization's data warehouse. Technologically, the organization leveraged PHP, CSS, JavaScript, and HTML running on Red Hat Linux and Apache with mySQL serving as the underlying database technology.Additionally, as Founder, MarKel gained invaluable experience in fundraising. Working primarily throughout the state of Ohio, MarKel traveled extensively to each of the state's entrepreneurial signature programs, supported by the Ohio Department of Development, presenting to receive grants to help extend the needed funding to build out the invention. And while the program eventually ended, MarKel was able to successful win $100K in grants to help validate the idea for commercialization.

As Chief Information Officer, MarKel was responsible for all of the company's corporate technology infrastructure. During his tenure, MarKel lead the company's transition away from its legacy Accounting System (Peachtree) to a new Accounting System (Solomon) across each of its three (3) branch locations. Additionally, MarKel created the company's first Development Center that allowed Programmers and Application Developers a collaborative co-working space that improved the company's ability to deliver its solutions. He served as part of the the company's Executive Leadership team providing strategic oversight for new business focused primarily on growing the eBusiness and Project Management Practices. Under his direction, both practices flourished landing major contracts with Bank One (Columbus, OH) and Key Bank (Cleveland, OH).
