Day to day tasks include HV switching, liaising with National Grid to perform switching operations and ensuring the station is generating to it's contracted capacity. Ensuring that the 4 x 500MW units are performing efficiently and in a safe manner. Responding to emergency situations. Operating auxiliary plant. This role involves passing an authorisation to AP1 (authorized person 1) under the fiddlers ferry generation system safety rules, this used to be known as a SAP (senior authorized person) under the CEGB generation system safety rules. This authorization enables me to prepare, issue and cancel isolation certificates (permits to work) and sanction work control documents.I identify which hazards need to be controlled, define isolations and other safety precautions required to achieve safety from the system, this includes isolating HV apparatus (3.3kv and 11kv.) It is also my responsibility to carry out the plant and apparatus isolations.

This role means that I am the safety and environmental representative for my shift. I attend monthly station safety and environmental forums and raise any concerns that any member of my shift may have. The information received at these meetings is then relayed to my shift via a shift forum which I chair. Also any tool box talks or relevant safety and environmental incidents are delivered to the shift by myself. This role also means that I am involved with organising any training requirements any member of my shift may need and arranging courses via HR.

This role involves ensuring that the day to day running of the plant is done as efficiently as possible whilst adhering to stringent environmental limits. Ensuring the plant is started up and shut down in a safe manner whilst instructing the assistant unit controller whilst they are out on plant. Ensuring weekly, monthly and annual routine tests are carried out on emergency cut-in plant. Over coming unforeseen problems whilst minimising environmental impact and maintaining a high safety standard. Giving and receiving a comprehensive hand over at the start and end of each shift. Making sure that a full and concise unit log is maintained throughout the shift, entering any changes that may have occurred, plant that may have been isolated, defective plant etc. Aid in the return to service of plant from major overhaul.

Carrying out outside plant duties whilst in contact with the unit controller by radio. This may include day to day running of the plant, unit start up and shut down, also carrying out emergency procedues when required. It also involves carrying out plant checks, identifying problem plant areas e.g. oil leaks, pipework failure, over heating motors. With this information then entering defects into a computer generated package to log the plant problem and intitiate the required maintenance. This role also involves giving and receiving a comprehensive handover at the start and end of each shift. Aid in the return to service of plant from major overhaul.
