In my role, I head up multiple teams: a Data Analytics team building analytics products; a BI and CRM team; and a business change team working on business automation

Aphelion is the holding company for my various ventures - the work spans the whole ambit of information management, from the capture of data using custom software / hardware solutions, data management and transport, business intelligence and reporting, and systems integration. The three divisions of Aphelion Software built successful and profitable software products for mining, vehicle tracking, and government departments/non-government organisations (charities); worked as a partner developing software for insurance and retail companies; and consulted to the biggest blue-chip organisations on business intelligence and financial cost optimisation.KEY ACHIEVEMENTS:• Launched 3 profitable and internationally successful software products• Optimised African Explosives Limited fuel-explosives delivery cycles to be able to use 2 instead of 3 MPUs, saving hundreds of millions of dollars per mine• With CARE Somalia, created monitoring and evaluation software and processes to successfully deliver food to Somalia during a drought and famine, saving potentially thousands of lives• Created a profitable, best of breed 25 person consultancy• Negotiated multiple partnerships and joint ventures that led to millions in revenue

Meerkat Monitoring & Evaluation SoftwareMark’s company (Aphelion Software) was contracted to build an M&E toolkit for the South African government, reporting directly from Department of Performance Monitoring & Evaluation (DPME), directly to the Cabinet of the SA government.Taking this initial development work, Mark further developed and promoted the M&E toolkit – now called Meerkat – into East Africa, deploying solutions for CARE Kenya, and CARE Somalia. Eventually, the Meerkat software product was open sourced to better serve the role of the NGOs in Africa – a way of giving back from the successes of the consultancy business.

At Anglo Coal, I integrated machine data from draglines (enormous mining machines that move 160 tons of rock in one swing) to near real time in cab dashboards that enabled operators to minimise machine wear whilst maximizing production.In addition, production and maintenance data from 16 sites globally was integrated, allowing for economies of scale to be applied across multiple mines

I consult through Intervate to various clients in the business intelligence and information management space.

MetaFlux built software solutions for managing electricity distribution and transmission networks, including 3D models of power line equipment that allowed engineers to interact and log the real world status onto a model to be loaded into a central database. Key technological achievements included a ground breaking online/offline synchronisation solution.
