Profile bio

About Mark Hall

First and foremost, I’m a mechanical engineer with a passion for turbomachinery. During my adult life, I’ve spent most all of my free time pursuing knowledge in the multi-disciplines of this subject, through both academic and practical experiences. At the start of my career, I was the youngest person in the engineering departments where I was employed. I created detail manufacturing drawings, learned dimensional geometric tolerances, manufacturing methods and shop practices. Then I got my big break, I was offered a position at a pump company. There I began by doing machine design, pressure boundary, shaft and key stress and bearing life calculations. As I advanced at this company, I moved into a position reporting directly to the Chief Engineer. This new position gave me the opportunity to do hydraulic designs of impellers and diffusers for large centrifugal pumps and compressors. Also, this position gave me an introduction to vibration analysis by doing torsional and lateral rotordynamics. Later I gained more analytical skills in CFD by using CFDesign, ANSYS CFX and Simmetrix’s meshing applications.I took a special interest in the programs that I used, which the companies I worked for wrote in order to create hydraulic shapes of passages for impellers, volutes and double suction bays. I've seen firsthand that these types of programs made the company more competitive by reducing engineering time. At this point in my career I was using my leisure time researching non-uniform rational basis spline and surface (NURBS) algorithms, database, object oriented programing, doc/view and model–view–controller (MVC) architectures. I desired an understanding of methods that could be used for managing hydraulic data and perform complex design calculations more effectively. These experiences gave me the leadership skills needed to manage small teams in the field of turbomachinery. Even though I enjoyed engineering, I felt that I needed to move into a management role in order to further pursue my interests. I really enjoy mentoring and streamlining work processes to help other people on my team to be successful. I am now considering transitioning back to the work that I really enjoy, which is being closer to the actual engineering of the product.
