About Mark Hannel
I am a Machine Learning Scientist at Impact Observatory where I leverage machine learning to create global maps from satellite imagery and remote sensing data. Our team developed the first global, 10 meter land use and land cover map, and have since made a series of these maps extending from 2017 through 2022. Check our work out at https://livingatlas.arcgis.com/landcoverexplorerI get excited about opportunities where I leverage my background in physics, mathematics, and computer vision to tackle hard technical challenges with immediate impact.
Listed skills include Academic Tutoring, Physics, Mathematics, Condensed Matter Physics, and 17 others.

Machine Learning Scientist Ii
Data Science Engineer
The data science team empowers asset managers at Neuberger Berman with insights from alternative data. My role spanned two positions: data scientist and data engineer.Data Science Responsibilities:• Evaluate prospective data sets under the guidance of business partners by prototyping and pitching potential use cases. • Challenge or support investment theses with analysis driven by one or more alternative data sets.• Enrich data sets with inferred fields via statistical analysis or through supervised machine learning.Data Engineering Responsibilities:• Build robust pipelines for transferring, cleaning, and delivering data.• Incorporate quality assessment monitoring to minimize engineering hours spent debugging.
Data Science Fellow
• Built In-A-Pinch, a web app for statistically-backed Citi Bike trip advice• Forecasted the supply and demand of bikes and docks at all (730+) NYC Citi Bike stations• Implemented Dijkstra’s algorithm to minimize travel time across multiple modes of NYC transportation• Constructed a flask front end to query a postgreSQL database and provide ranked routes
Phd Candidate, Physics
Our group pioneers techniques to image, classify, and manipulate systems on the scale of micrometers. With our ability to observe and manipulate these particles, we can quantitatively observe the fundamental physics which dominate at this scale and the complexity that arises out of coupled interactions.• Developed software for real-time image analysis and hardware manipulation (lasers, control stages, etc)• Replaced heuristic-based feature detection and localization algorithms with a convolutional neural network thereby increasing detection rates three-fold and decreasing false negative detection rates• Trained support vector machines for parameter estimation to reduce compute time by a factor of 1000x
Part-Time Adjunct Instructor
I was privileged with the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for several undergraduate courses. During the Fall of 2012, I co-taught Physics III, a course on optics, sound and thermodynamics. In this role I held a weekly recitation covering the course topics and offered optional lessons before examination periods. Also during the Fall of 2012, I was a course grader for 20th Century Physics of Space, Time and Matter, a physics course for non-majors. Outside of grading for the 80+ students enrolled in this course, I offered homework help sessions for individuals and for groups.During the Spring of 2013, I taught two sections of Thermal and Statistical Physics. My weekly recitations for this course bolstered the students understanding of course material through novel examples not found in their textbook or problem sets.
Academic Tutor
I provide tutoring and test preparation services in Physics, Mathematics and Engineering. My experiences include but are not limited to upper-level collegiate courses including Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Calculus I,II,III, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics.
