Profile bio

About Mark Hansford

I am passionate about advancing industry knowledge such that civil engineers and civil engineering can better deliver for society. As Director of Engineering Knowledge at the Institution of Civil Engineers I am responsible for identifying and delivering knowledge content for civil engineering professionals such that they can continuously improve, building expert networks and then exploiting the knowledge of these engineers and these networks to create new insights that advance the way we deliver infrastructure and create infrastructure systems that are sustainable and resilient. Linked to my ICE role I am also a Board director of CROSS, the industry safety body that supports confidential reporting on structural safety and a member of the strategic leadership group of GIRI, the Get It Right Initiative that strives to eliminate error in construction. The group assists GIRI in forging stronger links with policy makers in government and at board level across the construction sector in order to stimulate debate on error reduction, drive change and prioritise routes to improvement. Before joining ICE I spent almost 20 years at New Civil Engineer (NCE), latterly as Editor where I led the 2016 relaunch of the brand as a quality print monthly supported by news delivered digitally. The new-look magazine was named IBP Magazine of the Year 2016/17. The same year I drove the launch of the NCE100 Companies of the Year Awards and in 2017 drove the launch of New Civil Engineer's Festival of Innovation and Technology. At New Civil Engineer I have reported from the scene of a host of international engineering disasters including a bridge collapse in northern Portugal, a tunnel fire in Baltimore and tsunami-struck Sri Lanka. In 2003 I was the first construction reporter into Iraq following the second Gulf War and my reports earred me the title IBP News Reporter of the Year. I was also IBP Construction and Infrastructure Writer of the Year 2013 for a series of reports on infrastructure in Russia. I have a MEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Birmingham and spent three years as a practicing engineer with consultant Atkins before joining New Civil Engineer in 2000. While at Atkins I carried out water supply and distribution analyses in the UK and abroad including conducting a fixed asset condition and revaluation study for the 100 largest urban water schemes in Ghana.I am a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and am also a member of the International Building Press board of management and volunteer my time to judge numerous industry awards.

Listed skills include Editorial, Magazines, Publishing, Copywriting, and 42 others.
