Hinnells, M. (in press) How Green is your Pension? To be published by How Green Media, Amazon. Pensions are a fifty-year investment. Over this time frame climate chnage is material. The book examines the £50 trillion invested in pensions globally. It explores what individual pension holders, trustees, and major investors, can do to minimise risks to investors from stranded assets, and maximise opportunities to invest in solutions. It draws on personal experience of working on pension owned assets, including airports, power generation assets and water companies. The book is 60,000 words and includes over 400 references, and marks a change in direction in my work, away from projects on individual sites, towards focusing on investment opportunities and risks.

• Ricardo is a global company with more than 5,000 engineers scientists and policy consultants across the EU and Atlantic regions.• Mark is playing a key role in the UK Aviation sector as it comes to terms with climate change issues, including, uniquely, being an expert witness, defending the local planning authority's position in cross examination by Kings Council and Planning Inspectors, in all of the major airport public inquiries in the last few years (at Stansted, Bristol and Luton airports) and supporting Luton and Gatwick focus on achieving net zero carbon emissions for ground operations even with major airport expansion.• From a design and technoloy perspective the airports need future proofing in terms of new heating and cooling systems, new demands in terms of visitor electric vehicle charging, and new onsite and near to site power generation especially solar. There are also emerging needs for electric aircraft and hydrogen aircraft. tis then has a significant impact on electricity demand and grid connection needs. Thus airport energy strategy needs a long term plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions. • From a business perspective, Mark brought in more than 11 times his salary in new business, in single tender and through co-developing proposals with clients, with a very high success rate and thus a low cost, an example of Mark as 'rainmaker'.

• I was personally invited to return to Ricardo, after several other roles, by my former line manager who recognised I add value as a 'rainmaker' - using knowledge, insight and creativity• Supported renewable energy development across the UK water industry, the rail network, councils, private sector organisations and communities. The rail industry and the water industry are major users of electricity and both have opportunities to embed renewable energy on site or on adjacent sites. • The water sector could meet 40-80% of its electricity demands from renewables on site. My role was to quantify this potential and show how, across the UK water industry this high level of renewable energy could deliver major reductions in carbon emissions as well as energy cost savings.• The rail industry faces unique technical challenges in connecting renewables, because of the rapid fluctuation on power demand on the rail network I worked with others at Ricardo to demonstrate the 'first of a kind' installation in the UK. The rail industry is focused on safety with cost and carbon emissions secondary considerations. This makes it difficult for Network Rail to accept new business models.

The incubator led to several small start ups both successful and abortive companies. Successful companies include Manfacture2030, Susenco, and Voyage Control. Having set up Susenco, Mark moved out the incubator into Susenco and developed a number of solar and wind farm assets.Manufacture 2030 manages scope 3 emissions data collection across the supply chain to enable manufacturers and retailers to manage their carbon footprint. M2030 now has AstraZeneca, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and Ford amongst its customers, employs nearly 40 people, and has recently secured a further 5m in VCT funding. • Developed policy proposals to deliver a low carbon building stock in the UK, including 26 million homes and 2million non domestic buildings, with results published in 80 academic journal and conference papers

• Management of the £50million Community Energy programme to deliver a revitalised District Heating industry in the public estate (hospitals, universities, and local authorities), and leveraged £200million in investment in 4 years.

Technical and economic advice to support Government policy development in a low carbon form of electricity generation known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP). This included: • Drafted and then interpreted government policy on power station consents, to reduce gas use in power generation and promote CHP and renewable energy.• Supported development of legislation to implement the Climate Change Levy, to reduce fossil fuel use, including tax benefits worth £100m a year for CHP, as well as development of Enhanced Capital Allowances for energy saving equipment to drive investment in efficiency, including CHP.• Drafted a new CHP strategy for government

• Became involved in the development of EU Energy labeling via a research trip to the US, before the UK Government did, and was asked to lead UK government involvement in development of labelling. This is an example of Mark as 'rainmaker'.• Undertook technical and economic analysis to support EU energy labels and minimum efficiency standards for electrical appliances, working with most of the Energy Agencies across Europe. Developed the energy label and supporting evidence for washing machines dishwashers and dryers, ovens, lights, and standby consumption in electronics. • The energy label has become a market-maker for energy efficient products. The key principles of the energy label have been copied widely in places as far as China and Hong Kong, and Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The label has also been applied to other product groups including cars and buildings.
