Hello, my name is Markie Castro, I am a recent BSW graduate from California State University Chico. I am passionate about helping my community, advocacy, and research. My plans for the future are to obtain my Master's degree in social work within the next couple of years and become licensed. I currently work for CVS Pharmacy as an Operations Supervisor and have learned valuable tools through my 16 years of service. Additionally, the challenges that come with drug retail have helped shape who I am today. I am eager to start a new career in the field of social services with an organization where there is an opportunity for growth and fulfillment.I am a first-generation college student, and navigating the community college system was extremely difficult for me. However, programs like TRIO and PASS made my transfer to a university easier. There has been enormous support from the educators in my life and has only made me think the possibilities are endless. I am a mother to a special needs child. There are not many people out there who will understand what it means to have this title. My daughter has shown me a different view of the world and just how much kindness truly means. When she was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, I did not really know what that meant. It has taken a lot of learning and research to get to where we, as a family, are today. Being a parent is a 24hr job and just so much more worries with a special needs child. Although there are a lot of tough days, we try extremely hard to help her excel. Our huge milestones maybe someone else's small milestones. We have come in contact with a handful of supportive services and persons. These persons reassure me that she will have support when we are longer able to care for her. These are the thoughts that darken my day. A sense of worrisome constantly clouds my mind. Additionally, it motivates me to give her the best life I can.
