The Centre for Historical Analysis and Conflict Research (CHACR) is a new Army strategic research institute, set up on the personal direction of the Chief of the General Staff (CGS).The primary aim of the CHACR is systematically to examine past and current operations, conduct analysis and research into land-based warfare, contribute to the decision making of the General Staff, challenge conventional wisdom, and to act as an Army ‘think-tank’.The centre achieves this by stimulating and drawing upon wider academic and innovative thought and forging links to academia and strategic studies institutes in the UK and abroad. It supports Army force development and contributes to wargames, experimentation and seminars. It also leads the 'Red Team' challenge function for several Army strategic change programmes.The CHACR promotes the vital contribution that the conceptual component makes to success on the battlefield through prioritising intelligent research and analysis. It is a hub for scholarship and debate within the Army and is responsible for nurturing the careers of the Service’s brightest minds.Soldier ScholarsThe CHACR is focussed on promoting and developing Soldier Scholars. These are young and middle-ranking officers (and soldiers) that are experienced, intelligent, and can exercise independent and innovative thought, and who should be encouraged to ‘speak out of turn’, leading to the encouragement of a new breed of soldiers. These soldiers are encouraged to pursue more opportunities to undertake education in order to inform our doctrinal development.

Leadership: Temporarily promoted to Lieutenant Colonel to lead a multi-national planning team for a Force of over 20,000 troops in a country of over 2.3m square kilometers.Capability development: Led a country-wide review of UN military infrastructure and capability requirements, leading to a reduced footprint and budgetary savings while reorientating the Force to focus it on the trouble spots in the country.Communication: Regularly provided written and verbal briefings to high-level international delegations, including at UK ministerial level and FCO and other UK government agencies who were working in the DRC.

Leadership: Company Commander for over 100 of the UKs highest performing soldiers. Reduced resignation rate from over 30% on assuming Command, to less than 2%. Developed the Company so that each member could take over a task more senior than their current position, improving the depth of capability while increasing redundancy in the Company. Contingency: Developed the team which was then tasked with remaining at high-readiness (24 hours notice to move) to respond to UK government mission critical tasks world-wide. Deployed to UK territories in South Atlantic.

Top performer: Selected for a 'Where Talent Endures' post, reserved for those assessed to be in top 10% of their peer-group.Project management: developed a project model that was later adopted as an example of best practice across DE&S. Project delivery: Delivered approximately £100m of equipment in a short timeframe during a time of Government austerity and when funding was being cut throughout the military. This was achieved through writing compelling business cases which could withstand high level financial and political scrutiny.Research: Directed and managed short-term capability research for an area of military and government capability. Wrote the research strategy for this capability to include development requirements out to the year 2040.International engagement: Represented the UK MoD on several international working groups, including with NATO and the US Army, and to Europe and the Far East.

Graduated from the Defence Academy of the UK (2009) and, earlier, from the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (2000) and the Platoon Commanders Battle Course (2001). Leadership: Forming, training, and developing of high-performing teams ranging in size from 30 - 140 soldiers.Risk management/crisis management: Operated worldwide, often deploying as short notice and into highly pressured and dangerous situations. Took over some teams after their previous commander has been injured or was absent on operations. Risk management and Contingency planning: Developed the plans for stabilising and operating in hostile areas. Constant management of highly dangerous and dynamic situations, implementing contingency plans as required.Force generation: Managed the generation of over 100 Reservists for operations in Afghanistan. The Force Generation process, which I designed, was rated as exemplary by Headquarters Land Forces and was subsequently used as the example of how to best mobilise, prepare and deploy Reservist soldiers.Change management: Managed a large scale change project in a Reservist battalion, expanding the structure by 50% of manning. Managed the rapid recruitment process to achieve over 100% manning within 18 months.Resource management: Long and short term resource planning for both personnel and equipment.

Opto-electronic engineer for IBM's Storage Systems Division's (thin film industry) laser and infra-red inspection and ablation systems.Project management: Managed the procurement, installation, and commissioning of several classes of equipment and then managed them once in-service.Fleet management: Managed a fleet of four equipment types, then worth over £27m. I quickly established myself as the European Subject Matter Expert (SME) in some areas: often tasked to assist other sites in times of technical crisis.Finance: Managed capital and resource budgets under guidance from Finance Department. Liaised with Finance Department for 'Sale and Leaseback' arrangements.Research: Seconded to IBM Germany for six months, and IBM San Jose for four months. Worked with the development teams in San Jose for new products, and the Nobel Prize-winning establishment, the Almaden Research Centre, for the transition of products from research to product development.
