Young people should face no barriers to reading. A nonprofit organization, Pageturner promotes the love of reading by providing Kindles and an unlimited library of books to elementary, middle, and high school students in Oakland and the Bay Area. In community with teachers and instructional leaders, I built the vision for and fostered continuous improvement of our Humanities curriculum, instruction, and assessment, emphasizing project-based learning, critical pedagogy, and literacy.

I led our team of instructional coaches to promote a strong academic culture and to champion transformative learning experiences for all students. I also developed professional learning programs to help teachers thrive, including professional learning communities, teacher induction, all-network learning days, and summer institutes.

To support our belief that literacy is a civil right, I coached and facilitated a team of teacher leaders committed to deepening their knowledge on secondary literacy, implementing best practices of literacy instruction, and sharing their knowledge with colleagues.

San Francisco

With outstanding colleagues, I co-taught World Studies and taught English and U.S. History. Over the years, I also helped to develop the school’s four-year advisory program and advised the cohort with the highest graduation rate in school history. Also: Chaired Humanities department, coached teachers, led literacy initiatives, and launched school library.

Fremont, CA

On a team of five excellent teachers, I co-developed and co-taught American Studies, an interdisciplinary, project-based course with big, authentic performance tasks. I also taught World History, U.S. Government, and We the People, which competed in the State Finals for the first time.
