About Mark Jabbal
I am Associate Professor and Programme Director of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Nottingham, where I helped to setup an undergraduate aerospace engineering programme in 2016 and which I recently led through successful reaccreditation for AHEP4 with three PEIs (RAeS, IMechE and IET) in 2023. My primary research interests include aerodynamic flow control for drag reduction (experimental fluid mechanics; modelling and optimisation; vehicle systems integration) and heat transfer for thermal management. I was PI on the Clean Sky 2/H2020 WingPulse project, to advance active flow control technologies for more efficient aircraft, working closely with the Institute of Aviation (Poland) and Airbus (Germany). I have a degree in Aerospace Engineering (2003) and a PhD in Experimental Aerodynamics (2008) from The University of Manchester; the former as part of a sandwich course in which I worked as an Aerodynamics Consultant at Flow Science Ltd. I am currently External Examiner for the MSc Aerospace Engineering Programme at the University of Manchester. Following work as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The University of Manchester (2008-2011), I worked as Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering at Brunel University London (2011-2016). In 2012, I led a team of aerospace engineering students in developing an aerial-deployed, autonomous glider and flying it 22 miles across the Bristol Channel. The project, in collaboration with TV presenter James May, was aired on the BBC at the end of 2012 and the achievement was acknowledged in 2013 by a Royal Aeronautical Society Young Persons Award. In 2014, I was co-opted as a member of the Aerodynamics Specialist Group in the Royal Aeronautical Society and was elected Vice-Chair of the Group in 2024. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). I recently led the successful development of a Spitfire cockpit simulator, overseeing the build by more than 100 aerospace engineering students. The simulator is now open to the public in the Spitfire Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. I am a passionate advocate for public engagement in aeronautics and, as a STEM Ambassador, I have delivered a range of workshops and talks for the Manchester and London Science Festivals, The Inspiring Futures Foundation, EDT Headstart and Royal Institution Engineering Masterclasses. I was a Finalist in the WISE (Women Into Science & Engineering) Man Award 2019, in recognition of my work as founder of @AeroWomen (https://x.com/aerowomen) and in improving gender balance in my organisation and beyond.
