Field Operator Supervisor (Supervisor/ Renewable Materials/ Aquaculture/ R&D)

Gilbert, Az, Us

As Heliae grew, so did my role as a supervisor. With a completed and functional extraction facility, I was promoted to Field Operator Supervisor in August 2012. The production of algae started to accelerate at Heliae as a 20 acre demonstration facility was under construction. To match the production growth many new photo-bioreactors (PBR’s, e.g. algae ponds) were tested, installed, and commissioned. As a Field Operator Supervisor I was responsible for the continual health of our cultures, operations of multiple processing facilities, and the corresponding staff. Operation skills:*Graver filtration*UV sterilization*Safe use of industrial solvents*Solvent recovery systems*Basic plumbing*Forklift operationSupervisor skills:*Staff scheduling and accountability*SOP development*Testing and data collection*Data analysis and trending*Production optimization*Basic environmental reporting*Operation training*Safety training*Basic maintenance/ repair*TroubleshootingAs Field Operator Supervisor I had firsthand experience with multiple facilities. Overall this position required me to be dynamic, energetic, and adaptive. It was essential for keeping up with the ever changing work requirements of this position. I became accustom and very experienced with training, commissioning new technologies, handling sensitive cultures, mechanical skills, communication, and management. And I utilized my collective knowledge and experience to develop PBR’s of my own design. In June 2013, I resigned from Heliae Development LLC. and moved to Portland, OR.

Extraction Supervisor (Supervisor / Laboratory Technician/ Renewable Energy/ Biofuels/ R&D)

Gilbert, Az, Us

In May of 2011, I was transferred to Heliae’s new office, laboratory, and production site in Gilbert, Arizona; and was promoted to Extraction Supervisor.Pilot Algae Extraction and Refining Facility:The limits of my analytical, management, laboratory, mechanical, and schooling knowledge were pushed to their limits to accomplish this work. I rapidly developed skills on how to draw and update Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID). I actively participated in commissioning and HAZOP review. To get the facility running on time, I developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), underwent extensive safety training, and trained a staff of four. All SOP’s, run parameters, inventory, data collection, laboratory testing, and analysis was developed by me and my team. Laboratory work:*Dry weight*Ash free dry weight*Centrifuge*Pipette*Freeze dryer*Distillation*GC sample preparation*Esterification*Neutral lipid extraction*Polar lipid extraction*Protein extractionOperation skills:*Graver filtration systems*Programmable logic controller (PLC)*Industrial solvents*Solvent recovery systemsSupervisor skills:*Scheduling*Inventory*SOP development*Testing*Data analysis/ trending*Optimization*Reporting*Environmental compliance*TTB compliance*Public presentationsSafety training:*First Respondent*Blood borne pathogens*Fire*Compressed air*Compressed gas*Respirators*Fire retardant coverallsThe mile-stone of our success was on May 18st, 2012 when our CEO, Dan Simon, publicly delivered the first barrel of jet-fuel to SkyNRG. Our built facility had extracted oils from and processed all the algae for this ambitious project. It was an achievement to be proud of since proof of concept was demonstrated, which supports how the algae industry really can produce sustainable materials and fuel! May 2011 - Aug 2012

Field Operator (Laboratory Technician/ Aquaculture/ R&D)

Gilbert, Az, Us

This position was my introduction the state-of-the-art algae industry. Heliae’s first demonstration facility was located on Arizona State University’s (ASU) polytechnic campus west. The duties of a Field Operator were to ensure the health of the algae aquaculture and to harvest our final product. This required constant temperature and pH reading throughout the day. Here I learned standard algae testing laboratory procedures using the laboratory on campus. Laboratory work:*Dry weight*Ash free dry weight*Nile red lipid analysis*Latchet nitrate testing*Centrifuge*Pipette*Freeze dryerMaintenance and checks of aquaculture climate control systems were performed daily; for the high summer temperatures (reaching 115F) can kill an entire culture. This required knowledge of swamp coolers, heat exchangers, heating systems, and basic plumbing.Sterile transferring techniques were developed and used to ensure each culture reached a pre-determined density. Cultures were harvested when a desired density and/or lipid content was reached. This involved using a variety of specially developed methods to produce a solid, mostly dry, cake of biomass.
