About Mark Chambers

Over the past 30+ years I have had the privilege of helping a variety of companies improve their organizations through a simple process of making things Repeatable, Scalable and Measurable. I am a big believer that if you can measure it, you can improve it. I love systems, and putting ones in place that allow for hyper growth in a company. There is something greatly satisfying when you can gather a group of people together, cast a vision worth following, and then watch as magic happens.If you read through the jobs below, I encourage you to start back in the early 90’s when I did my first self-employed company in California. If you pay close attention to the narrative, the experiences at each company build on one another culminating in my latest chapter in a fascinating adventure!As a serial entrepreneur, let me summarize some of my life lessons:• Work hard!     Slipglass provided security and engineering services to businesses, government and military information systems in the banking, defense and homeland security industries.When I got the call from the founder and CEO Mark Baisley (who had previously sold a security company with a couple of partners) it went something like this: Mr. B: "Mark, I'm getting the band back together!"Mr. C: "Great! What do you want me to do? Sales? Operations?"Mr. B: "I want you to be the CFO." Now if you haven't gone down to the Education portion of my profile, do so now and you will see my training out of high school was in Broadcasting ... not what you would traditionally see for the CFO of a company. But back to the story:Mr. C: "Mark, you need someone with letters after their name if you want to raise seed money and venture capital!" Mr. B: "Now wait a minute, didn't you just leave a company that had annual audits, quarterly investor updates and monthly board meetings with full financial accountability? I need someone I can trust!" So ... I created full financials for a Private Placement Memorandum used in raising $600K of early stage capital and got to walk potential investors through 84 pages of financials. Additionally, I set up all accounting and financial operations, developed recruiting and human resource policies and procedures and defined communications and reporting procedures. We took the company from a concept to a fully functioning company in 6 months.This opportunity allowed me to get a view of the "Big Bang" approach to starting a company that was much different from the "Boot Strap" approach I had known.

    TechStart provided staffing of Mission Critical Talent for both commercial and Department of Defense engineering projects. It was a for profit company that was majority held by a non-profit corporation. This unusual arrangement required quarterly shareholder updates and annual financial audits. Over 7 years, our company grew from one employee to over 23 employees working in Department of Defense, Aerospace, Banking, Credit Card and Non-profit companies. I reported to the Chairman of the Board, Rocky Scott, whom was the President of the Economic Development Corporation for Colorado Springs (and TechStart's majority shareholder). I can still remember my first meeting with Rocky when he asked me "Where are your financials?" to which I pointed at my checkbook and said "You mean this?" ... that was the beginning of what I call my MBA in the school of Rocky Scott. Over the years I developed strategic marketing and sales plans to support corporate goals and growth objectives resulting in company revenue increasing over 800% with full P&L responsibilities including budgeting, cash flow and financial reporting. I recall thinking "What have I done? I went from this nice little company where I was my own boss to this sometimes overwhelming responsibility with accountability to many!" That was when I began to live by "looking forward to looking back." When life get's crazy, don't get caught up in the present. Picture yourself at Christmas (or another time) looking back and seeing how it all came together. It's a great way to see your way through challenging times.

    Datanomix was a Midrange computer engineering firm specializing in the banking and credit card industry. I was recruited to help launch a consulting practice and during the 15 months I was there, I hired over 30 consultants. The company grew from 35 to 96 employees, and my commissions began to skyrocket! What does the new VP joining the company do? "Mark, we see where we are going and where you are going, and we want to make today your last day ..."To say I was floored was an understatement! Just when it looked like my ship had sailed, it got sunk! Now I know what you might be thinking, but you can't look at each situation without looking at the big picture ... and you might not see that picture for some time. I know it took me years to see the value in what had happened.In hindsight, I have to thank that VP because had it not been for his shortsightedness, I would never have started the company that was to become TechStart! And, had I planned to start a company with 3-6 months of reserves in the bank, I would never have adopted the mantra I share to this day with other Entrepreneurs "If you are not selling, you are dying!" If you have recently-or are thinking about-launching a company: Sell, sell, sell! Don't get caught up in Logo's, Websites, Letterheads, then 3 months later think "I had better start selling something ..." By then it's too late. Those other things are important, but get the cash flow started ... FAST!
