I understand that most unhappy customers simply wish to be heard, and therefore did not find the need to apply discounts often, although at times I deemed it necessary and it was always appreciated. I accomplished this by recognizing that high quality and private golf courses would have attendants who would go out to customers after they arrived in the parking lot to greet and assist them with their bags and rides to the clubhouse - our course did not do these things, so I began to do so when I worked. In doing this, I learned how to assess the personalities of a group I was driving up to so that I could address them in a jovial manner that suited them. Older folks, I would call 'sir' and be more congenial. Rowdier groups might be more entertained by a more jocular attitude. In any case, my fellow Outside Service employees saw that I began to receive tips and began to meet and greet customers in the same way, bettering the first line of communication with our customers and improving their overall experience.
