I felt strongly enough about my recent invention, Hidbin, a way of concealing unsightly wheelie bins (aren't they all), to take on The Dragons on TV3’s Dragons’ Den.They liked it, thank goodness.Sanctuary Synthetics is my main preoccupation, however, I've always been interested in ‘the room outside’ and how to make the most of it given the less than sun-soaked climate in Ireland. I started out importing log cabins (my cosy office is one) and branched out (pun intended) into garden landscaping. A pivotal moment for us was the Home and Garden Show in the RDS circa 2003 where we pitched the concept of artificial grass to the great Irish public. As you can imagine, phrases such as ‘coals to Newcastle’ were muttered around our stand for the duration. But we were not deterred and look at us now: we have a booming business and a product that just keeps growing in popularity (though the beauty of it, of course, is that it doesn't keep growing!) and we’re the top suppliers and installers in the country. It’ll come as no surprise to learn that I'm a farmer’s son and therefore no stranger to (real).business is in Naas but we supply to every county in Ireland. Hidbin, may be purchased in the UK too.I absolutely love the weird and wonderful uses to which our Dutch made grass – has been put by our clients; fake topiary for a summer festival, stuck to a vehicle, covering a sofa, on a stage set, everything except sports grounds in fact! I've always loved a challenge and it’s something I have tried to instil in my team at Sanctuary Synthetics.
