I was a graphic designer for an in-house art department serving the company. I worked with internal customers to develop a wide range of products such as brochures, signs, posters, displays, banners, logos, publications, advertisements, t-shirts, promotional items such as postcards and bookmarks. I also designed graphic elements for websites, PowerPoint presentations and video productions. In addition, I did photograph corrections and enhancement and illustration that includes a bit of cartoon art at times.

I was first a graphic designer and then became art director at this printing company that had a staff of graphic designers and production staff. We worked with customers through the concept stage of their print needs, through production of the printed product to prepare it for the pre-press department that went on to the printing presses. I also did camera and negative work that led to the production of the printing plates to print the actual project. Typical printed projects were business cards, envelopes, brochures, design of ads for publication, catalogs, flyers, etc.

Knoxville, Tennessee

I was pretty much a one-man art department for this small advertising agency. I created newspaper and magazine ads, brochures, billboards, and other print material for a variety of local clients. Also helped out on video location shoots and audio recording for radio commercials. I did a lot of design for companies involved with the 1982 World's Fair held in Knoxville, TN. Two advertisements that I designed were in the official World's Fair Guidebook.

In this position, I was a paste-up artist which required me to take a designer's layout and produce a paste-up (or mechanical) on a cover stock like paper and paste the graphic elements such as blocks of text, graphics, photos, logos, to create the ad and make it camera-ready. This was the process used before the use of computers. I also learned how to process film negatives out of the camera... a talent I have now forgotten... and a process that has been outdated by digital photo scanning and digital photography.

Straight out of high school and attending the University of Tennessee, I mostly did paste-up/mechanical work on newspaper and magazine ads, packaging, and printed materials.
