Before beginning my career as an attending physician, my leadership journey took root at the Virginia Military Institute and through my experiences standing alone in the ER as a physician assistant. These experiences provided the basis for my leadership skills. I continually honed my skills in developing, managing, and running high-performance cross-functional teams in the ICU and the OR.Filled with passion and dedication, I began my career in a four-person practice. Little did I know that my first Christmas would be a grueling 8-day stretch, covering an inpatient pulmonary service and two hospital ICUs solo. With every new admission coming after midnight, I barely slept, unaware that this was just the beginning of my arduous journey.As the years passed, I witnessed my colleagues facing their challenges and wounds; I successfully defended myself against a specious board action. Seeking a better environment, I moved to a specialty hospital with an incredible culture and great leadership. I expanded my leadership skills with my CEO and my coach, a retired CDR USN, SEAL who became my mentors, guiding me like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. While I remain a healer, I now see my mission as enriching people's lives, not just extending them.
