Spinnup is a global DIY music distribution service for independent artists, focusing on data-driven talent discovery for Universal Music’s labels.Created a new business function focused on maximising value from data assets, a core component of the Spinnup business model that required greater focus. The role combined ownership of data-related business strategy (data-driven A&R, management information, insights for artists) as well as solutions themselves (architecture, engineering, governance). Solutions encompassed data acquisition, cleansing, transformation, integration and reporting primarily using the Google Cloud data stack (including BigQuery, Composer / Airflow, Python, Data Studio, Kubernetes, Docker, Data Store and App Engine). Relied upon product management concepts to direct investment by redefining A&Rs as customers and focusing on their (as well as artists’) needs and problems, as identified through research.

Responsible for establishing and managing a combined technology and product function within Spinnup. This involved bringing development and maintenance of core products in-house and moving from pilot implementations to reliable and scalable long-term solutions. Grew the team to 8 people as well as onboarding both onshore and offshore outsourced teams, managing a budget of over £1m. Introduced product thinking to the organisation and developed and owned the product strategy for both artist and A&R-facing products. Working as a division within Universal Music Group, gained valuable experience in managing a wide variety of stakeholders within a large, geographically distributed organisation.

Delivered multiple solutions to improve decision making based on data, with a primary focus on helping decide which new artists should be signed to Universal labels. This included creating a centralised data store integrating data from several separate systems and exposing insights using interactive dashboards. Technologies: SQL Server, SSIS, C#, Qlik Sense, AWS.
