I got to know the founders in early 2006, and was named their founding chair, a job i held until September of 2012. After 6 years off, i returned as Chairman in 2018. I joined the board in 2000, and was named Chair in July of 2011, left in 2015 to join the Obama Administration, and was asked to rejoin as a Life-Trustee in the fall of 2018. I was just elected to become Emeritus.

An energetic attempt to create a progressive media brand, on terrestrial radio, satellite radio, and the Web. We hired Al Franken, Marc Maron, Janeane Garofalo and Rachel Maddow. An incredible ride, poisoned by corruption and advertising backlash. Lessons learned file was huge. I rejoined the effort from 2007-2012 but it never regained altitude.

Launched in late March of 2004. Staggeringly intense experience. Met some of the most interesting people of my life, had some of the "highest highs" of my career, and had some of the most distressing moments of my existence. All in all, memorable, worth it, but sweetly painful.

IB was sold to Marchex, a publicly traded company. Fantastic investment and advised by a "gilt-edged" board of advisors, if I do say so myself. The founder is an extraordinarily talented entrepreneur.

Great company. We really got the engine started in the B2B revolution that continues to play out. We grew from 20 employees when I arrived to over 3000 at peak. Made some strong and strategic acquisitions and joint ventures (with companies like SoftBank and British Telecom). Met and worked with people that remain friends for life. Taking the company public in a successful IPO in February of 1999 remains one of my peak business experiences.

Started as head of Internet Initiatives. (Yes, the internet and AOL used to be very different things!) Created and ran the business-to-business efforts at AOL. The best quote about what it was like at AOL during my time there was: "Days are weeks, weeks are months, and months are years".Says it all.

Ran GE's online division. Competed with AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy, the Source, Delphi, etc. My boss reported directly to Jack Welch. I was an "e-band" at GE, i.e. the executive band of the company.

Comp-U-Card, then named CUC international, was the leader in online/interactive commerce and services from 1986 until 1994. Virtually all of what we know today as "ecommerce" was pioneered here.

We changed television. Period.

Youngest News Director and Anchorman for a Network Affiliate in the country. Yes, it was a lot like small-market "Ron Burgundy".
