Linko was a mobile first, customer relationship management CRM solution that automated the collection of sales activity data into a real-time, searchable social feed. I joined Linko as a result of the acquisition of Localstream and was responsible for leading the Engineering team. As a small team, this meant a lot of hands-on engineering, with AWS, Elasticsearch, Java8, Ruby, AngularJS & Ionic.

Localstream was a location-based search and content publishing platform that I co-founded in 2012 with Jilles van Gurp. Localstream's key innovation was the development of a Location Graph of the world that makes it easy to automatically tag web content with rich location information such as venues, streets, neighbourhoods and cities. The backend was built on top of Elasticsearch & Sinatra, and frontends were developed using ChaplinJS and Phonegap. Localstream grew to a team of 4 people before being acquired by Linko Inc.

Daon develops multi-modal biometric security middleware. I spent 2 years on product development and professional services in the Dublin office, driving the adoption of the Spring Framework for the core DaonEngine platform. I then relocated to the Washington DC office to help lead development of DaonPIV which is a framework for implementing the Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-12) standards for issuing secure biometric smartcards to federal employees. The frontend was based on Java Portlets (Liferay) with JBoss JBPM taking care of workflow on the backend. DaonPiv was adopted by a number of government agencies including the SBA and CIA.

RANOS was Ericsson's WCDMA Radio Access Network operation and support system for 3G networks.As a Java/CORBA consultant, I assisted the RANOS engineering teams with architecture, design, code reviews and troubleshooting. The frontend’s were Java Swing framework and the backend was implemented as CORBA objects running on Inprise Application Server.

Certmark was a startup venture in the area of digital signatures for intellectual property. I developed the initial MVP which allowed a user to select a digital file from their computer and get a thumbprint of the file (calculated in Java applet) digitally signed and timestamped by a central server according to the XML Digital Signature standard. The backend was implemented as a Java Servlet running on JBoss.

Purchasing Expert was an e-procurement product targeted at enterprise purchasing departments. I was involved in reengineering the existing frontend solution moving moving it from Java applets to a much thinner Java, Servlet, JavaScript, XSLT combination running against BEA Weblogic Application Server.

Orbism was an expert CORBA consultancy with close ties to IONA Technologies, a NASDAQ quoted technology startup which was one of the leading success stories in Ireland during the late 1990s. I initially spent 6 months working onsite with IONA in an internal support role for both the OrbixWeb and OrbixOTM product development teams. This was followed by professional services work with Norkom Technologies’ helping to design and implement the first release of 'Alchemist' which was Norkom's flagship CRM platform. Java applets were how web frontends were developed in those days and server logic was implemented in distributed CORBA services.

A Software Engineering internship that I undertook as part of my bachelors degree in Computer Applications. I got exposure to what was then considered a state of the art technology stack for the insurance industry. My focus was on writing scripts to assist with a data migration project from an insurance package called POLISY running on a Concurrent 3280 Mini System to a package called PROGEN which runs on the IBM AS400 Platform. This was done using a COBOL based query language called TXL to extract data from a legacy TOTAL network database and convert it into a form suitable for the new DB400 relational database.
