USS PLEDGE, MSO-492, Seattle WAUSS CONQUEST, MSO-488, Persian GulfAs the leading sonar technician, maintained sonar in Persian Gulf Operations with zero down time resulting in 100% mission readiness. Responsible for training west coast minehunting sonar technicians prior to Persian Gulf deployment. On scene in Operation Praying Mantis which was the largest naval confrontation since WWII. Directed Navy EOD Seal team in approaches to underwater mines and subsequent destruction. Received Navy Achievement Medal from the Secretary of the Navy for performance in 1988 Persian Gulf tour and command Navy Achievement Medal for 1989 Persian Gulf tour. Stepped outside of job rating to qualify as Combat Information Center Watch Supervisor. Also advanced in damage control teams to number one firefighter/hoseman, On Scene Leader, and eventually as Locker Leader in charge of half the ship’s firefighting/damage control team. Collateral duties as departmental supply manager and career counselor, eventually becoming the ship’s Command Career Counselor in charge of career guidance and retention for the entire ship.
