Mark Charles is a London-based writer, director, and producer, whose recent works include documentaries Rebel of the Keys (2016), Journey to Bregenz (2014), Der Andere, (ORF 2013)and a project Shakesperia (performed at the Royal Festival Hall in July 2016 and, How High is the Moon, June 2017). Commissioned by Austrian broadcaster Unitel, Journey to Bregenz shows how André Tchaikowsky’s award-winning opera The Merchant of Venice travelled from being discovered 30 years after its completion, to its world premiere in one of Europe’s most famous opera festivals.Mark also co-wrote and produced two short films Door out of the Dark (2007) and Without (2011), and directed, produced, and wrote a screenplay for his feature film The Secret Philosophy (2010). His co-written work Al Shanta was shortlisted for the Pears Foundation Film Fund at the UK Jewish Film Festival.Having worked as both a copy and tech writer, Mark went on to direct advertisements and business videos for various companies, such as The Financial Times and Reebok. He helped produce The Chapel, funded by the UK Film Council, and now continues to work as a script consultant for independent films. Among his other recent projects is a documentary currently in production, The Morrow, exec producing the documentary, Left In Kathmandu, which he sold for worldwide distribution, and broadcast documentary, Der Andere, as director, produced for ORF Austria, (2013).As a writer, he is completing a collection of short stories and is working on his first novel. He has a keen interest in the arts, music, philosophy, and politics, and contributes to the arts and political magazine Naked Punch. Currently Mark is developing two further projects: a personal documentary about love and life, and a feature film.
