This traditionally black community in the San Joaquin Valley has been subjected to environmental and social injustices for decades, and faces more risk with the emerging Tulare Lake and changing climate. Working with community members to develop a cemetery plan that works best for their needs is my priority.

I maintained grounds through mulching, planting, pruning, and weeding, and learned how to operate and care for equipment such as loaders, string trimmers, chainsaws, utility trucks and trailers.

I worked at The UPS Store in Maumee, Ohio during the 2020 holiday season. UPS was processing hundreds of millions of extra shipments due to COVID-19, and my role consisted of working at the front of the store processing and packaging items.

Under the guidance of Dr. Dorceta Taylor, I began my first experience conducting research outside of the classroom as a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar. During my first summer with the program, I worked with the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments team to compare the 2014 and 2018 National Climate Assessments’ changes over four years. In my second summer, I created a green infrastructure guide on how to best implement urban rain gardens and bioswales to combat our changing climate, learning how to conduct interviews and work on a team of ten scholars throughout the process.The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program has a goal of incorporating diversity and inclusion into the environmental field, and I am grateful for the opportunity to discover new ways of viewing, understanding and protecting our Earth's resources with such a diverse community.

After participating in the Denison Service Orientation in my first year, I led and then coordinated the trip in 2018 and 2019. This orientation takes place in Washington, D.C., where we volunteer with people experiencing homelessness in the city and build relationships amongst students entering college.
