Yle News has recently fully turned the corner into the digital age. And at Yle News, it's all about Finland and it's all in English on the web, in podcasts and on the radio.My job has involved everything from anchoring and producing daily newscasts; creating, writing and producing independent reports.In roles as producer and show host, I helped launch Yle News' weekly podcast All Points North. I am constantly increasing my skills on Avid and Adobe platforms.Social media is an essential part of building audiences, so increasingly, lots of time is spent on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram doing so. During my tenure at the department our social media audience has grown exponentially.I also have more than a decade's worth of experience in News Coordination at Yle's EBU desk. The job required Avid-based video production, a broad knowledge of news satellite protocol and coordination, writing of prepared reports as well as turning around video material on a tight schedule.

I have more than a decade's worth of experience in News Coordination at Yle's EBU desk. The job required video editing skills, translation, dopesheet writing and distribution of it all on a very tight schedule.Multitasking is the name of the game. One minute I'm on the phone to Iraq trying to secure a location for a correspondent, the next, scavenging for video to illustrate a story from another corner of the world, and the next I'm hammering out copy and video for quick distribution to 73 broadcasters in 53 different countries via the EBU satellite network.

Over the years one thing I've noticed about being a writer is that no matter what the subject, the main thing is to keep it direct and informative. Writing also has to keep readers interested.I've helped start ups and corporations with articles, features and promotional writing for news sites and edited copy for industry and education. Regardless of the medium or subject, when a client needs help I follow my journalistic instincts and training - and I never 'bury the lead.' The Internet has afflicted most people with attention deficit disorder. Readers on the web need constant reinforcement to absorb what you're telling them. It's not enough to merely keep an audience informed with facts; good writing requires rhythm, nuance and clarity.

Back when news on the Internet was still somewhat a novelty, I left my reporter job at the local weekly newspaper, to join VillageSoup.com, based in the United States. The idea of it at the time was quite unusual; VS would soon become an award-winning local source of breaking news on the Internet. The Camden, Maine-based start-up was opening a branch in Belfast, and I, along with another reporter, ran the bureau.In the relatively brief time I was there, I wrote 500 articles on subjects as diverse as a small community in Maine can offer. Those stories included tales about City Hall, local businesses, features about everything from cable company malfeasance to 'Big Box' store protests to a feature about the local Cat Lady who'd lost her childhood home. I wrote columns, crime and court reports and shot and published photo-essays of the beautiful things going on in Waldo County.It was an exciting time, and a great way to get to know a place.
