I work at Aalto University's Water & Environmental Engineering Research Group as Associate Professor on water resources management and policy. My research focuses on those themes as well as environmental governance, sustainability, water diplomacy and integrated approaches. I am the Programme Director of our Master Programme in Water and Environmental Engineering (http://aalto.fi/wat). I also teach both Bachelor and Master's courses, including my own Master's course on water and governance (WAT-E2080).I currently supervise four Doctoral Researchers and three Postdocs, and I am a proud member of Water & Development Research Group (http://wdrg.aalto.fi).

Advising the ministry and Finnish embassies on development and water-related aspects in both bilateral and multilateral settings. Key themes I worked included e.g. water diplomacy, water resources management, water-energy-food security nexus and water supply, sanitation and hygiene i.e. WASH across the Finnish development policy priority areas (gender, economic growth, democracy & human rights, and climate change & natural resources). Key contexts I worked included Asia (Nepal), East Africa (Ethiopia and Kenya) as well as the UN system, European Union and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe OSCE/ETYJ. Returning to the same position I held in 2011-12 was in many ways rewarding and inspiring: many things had changed both within the Ministry and in development policy world!

Working at Aalto University on teaching, research and project management, with occasional stints elsewhere (examples below). Since July 2019, I was working only one day a week at Aalto and 80% at the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.In 2016-19, I lead Strategic Research Council-funded, interdisciplinary Winland project (http://winlandtutkimus.fi): for more on Winland, see below. I was also part of Tekes-funded The New Global project (http://newglobal.aalto.fi). My research at Water & Development Research Group (https://wdrg.aalto.fi) focused on sustainability, water resources management and transboundary water governance. Methodologically, I worked e.g. on integrated approaches, impact assessment as well as science-policy-stakeholder interaction.As University Lecturer, my teaching responsibilities include four Bachelor/Master's level courses as well as coordination of our new Master's Degree Programme on Water & Environmental Engineering (studies.aalto.fi/wat).

Leading Strategic Research Council (SRC) funded, interdisciplinary Winland project that looked at the linkages between security and sustainability in Finland (http://winlandtutkimus.fi). Winland was a unique, 3.5 M€ project that aimed for both scientific and societal impact and resulted in over 50 scientific publications (most of them multi- or interdisciplinary) as well as number of other achievements (e.g. 3+4 Doctoral Theses, 8 Policy Briefs, 47 blog posts and over 100 presentations & events). The project brought together around 30 experts from eight different research groups and organisations to look at energy, food and water security in Finland with the help of co-creation and scenarios.

Short Time Consultant for the World Bank and its Water Global Practice (GP) to support its Retooling Operations with Transboundary Impact i.e. ROTI project with a case study focusing on Finnish-Russian transboundary cooperation and hydropower operation in the Vuoksi River Basin.

Finland

Strategic consultant responsible for the process preparing the International strategy for Finland’s Water Sector for three Finnish ministries; Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and Ministry of the Environment. Responsible for research and related Discussion Paper on the interconnections between water, forests and climate change. The Discussion Paper was done for the Finnish Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, and it contributed to the discussion about European Commission’s Green Paper on adaptation to climate change.

- As the leader of the Socio-Economic Analysis Team, responsible for socio-economic surveys and analyses, social impact assessments and integration of socio-economic information with ecological and hydrological information in four Lower Mekong countries- Policy analyses of water-related policies for the Tonle Sap Area and the Mekong Delta based on policy models utilising probabilistic Bayesian networks- Training and capacity building activities in several ministries, institutes and universities in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam

Cambodia

- As the leader of the Livelihoods Team, responsible for planning and implementing a study looking at the influence of different built structures on people’s livelihoods. The study also analysed alternative livelihood options and local people’s perception of the interconnectivity between hydrology, built structures, environment and livelihoods. Project funded by and implemented for the Asian Development Bank ADB by a consortium led by WorldFish Center.

Mekong: Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam

- A member of international and multidisciplinary IBFM Team of 3 people, responsible for preparing regional impact assessment framework as well as conducting social impact assessment of different flow scenarios in the Tonle Sap area in Cambodia

- Preparing a plan for nation-wide research program on water management (‘Veden vuosikymmenen tutkimusohjelma’), including stakeholder consultations and key-informant interviews as well as drafting of the actual program document.

- Responsible for socio-economic surveys and analyses, and social impact assessment in the Tonle Sap Area, including participatory village surveys, database analysis in GIS, literature review and key-informant interviews - Carrying out a policy analysis of different water-related policies for the Tonle Sap Area, based on policy model utilising a Bayesian networks - Main responsible for training and capacity building activities on socio-economic analysis in different ministries, institutes and universities in Cambodia

- Worked as an International Trainee for the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) project on urban planning and sanitation improvement in the city of Nicosia

- Project assistant in the educational, environmental and water resources development projects of a small NGO called Social Education and Development Society (SEDS)- Responsibilities included planning, supervision and reporting of watershed development and reforestation projects that were based on long-term participatory approaches (PRA, RRA)
