Profile bio

About Marko Keskinen

Hello there, thanks for popping in! I find ways to promote sustainability in water field. This means I work across interfaces and boundaries, combining knowledge and views from various sectors and actors. I work as an Associate Professor on water resources management and policy at Aalto University, Finland. In my research, I look at the linkages that water has with society and its development. My expertise covers e.g. water governance, transboundary water cooperation, water diplomacy and sustainability. My work builds on multi- and interdisciplinarity, and I'm vocal promoter of ‘soft-tech’ i.e. connecting technological know-how with broader understanding of the society. This also means that I work practically always in a team of experts from different fields. I have been lucky to get to be part of various interesting projects, including our Digital Waters DIWA Flagship (https://digitalwaters.fi), SRC-funded RELIEF project (https://relief-project.eu) and GloWater project, and our already finnished WINLAND project (http://winlandtutkimus.fi).Teaching-wise, I'm inspired by student-centered and problem-based learning, and use e.g. blended and flipped learning in my courses. I'm also the Programme Director of our award-winning Master's Programme in Water and Environmental Engineering (https://aalto.fi/wat).Thematically, my strengths lie in water and related natural resources as well as their diverse connections with people, sustainability and security. Geographically my work has focused on Southeast Asia and the Mekong River Basin, but I also have experience from South Asia, Central Asia, Middle East, Africa and, naturally, Finland. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Listed skills include Sustainable Development, Sustainability, Climate Change, Water Resources, and 29 others.
