About Mark Parfitt

I'm one of the lucky ones who wakes up each day excited about the work I do. Blending creativity with strategy, I'm on a mission to help employers in medium-sized cities, small towns, and rural areas attract and keep the brilliant talent they deserve. When I'm not developing employer branding strategies, you can find me in a college classroom, teaching the next generation of business leaders. Or, I might be out in the communities of central Pennsylvania, lending a hand where it's needed most.Every experience, from my longest-tenure role to my briefest gig has been an invaluable step on my journey. I've learned from every twist and turn, embracing both the triumphs and the challenges. My career is a testament to the belief that with passion, creativity, and a bit of community spirit, you can make a significant impact, no matter where you are.

  • The State University Of New York
    Director Of Enrollment Marketing
The State University Of New York Jul 2013 - Sep 2013
    Albany, Ny, Us
Sometimes, you step into a job expecting fireworks, and instead, you get a lesson in what doesn't quite fit. Sure, overseeing recruitment marketing for a 64-campus university system had its perks – it's not every day you get to say you're playing in the big leagues! But sometimes, the shoe just doesn't fit, no matter how shiny it is. So, I made a swift exit stage left, sooner rather than later. Consider this brief chapter in my resume a salute to all the brave souls who've taken a leap, landed in the 'not quite right' spot, and had the courage to hop right back up in search of their true calling.
  • Suny Adirondack
Director Of Marketing And Community Relations
    Suny Adirondack Jul 2009 - Jun 2013
    Queensbury, Ny, Us
When I arrived at Adirondack Community College in 2009, the college was on probation by its accreditor and faced a very real threat of having to close its doors. New leadership was forced to turn challenge into opportunity, and I was proud to be part of a turnaround team that was small in numbers but knew how to think big. My contributions included leading a comprehensive rebranding project that went from initial market research through implementation of the new SUNY Adirondack brand in under four months. As a member of the college’s Strategic Enrollment Management team, I worked with leaders across the college to develop new, forward-thinking strategies to grow student enrollments in a geographic area with rapidly declining high school graduation rates. Our work resulted in the development and marketing of a new student housing facility, the identification of five “signature programs” that differentiated SUNY Adirondack from its competitors, and the launch of a New Media marketing campaign that resulted in target course enrollments increasing by 88% after just one cycle of advertising. Our marketing work at SUNY Adirondack was nationally recognized, earning honors from the Education Advertising Awards, National Council for Marketing & Public Relations, and the American Marketing Association. However, my proudest takeaway from four years of working in the Adirondacks was being part of a team that knew how to break through the groupthink and political bubbles so common in the higher education environments and instead use proven business concepts that resulted in the college seeing record-high enrollment numbers.
  • Penn State University
Associate, Marketing Strategy (Penn State Outreach)
Penn State University Nov 2008 - Jun 2009
    University Park, Pa, Us
Pitched as the largest internal marketing agency in American higher education, the reality was more akin to a scene from Office Space — but on an epic scale. My role? Tracking hundreds of colored folders as they journeyed through an endless sea of cubicles, meticulously chronicling each step in a program aptly named Workamajig. It sounds like a quest from an offbeat video game, doesn't it? Fortunately, this job offered a little more than just an intricate dance of musical folders. Along the journey, I developed valuable skills in search engine optimization and web analytics. So, while the days of the Outreach cube farm are behind me, the digital marketing acumen I cultivated there remains a treasured part of my professional arsenal.
  • Penn State University
Marketing Coordinator (Penn State Office Of Human Resources)
Penn State University Sep 2005 - Nov 2008
    University Park, Pa, Us
It’s hard to believe that one of Pennsylvania’s largest employers would have trouble finding employees. However, that was exactly the case when I joined Penn State in 2005. For decades, Penn State never had to work hard to find talented employees. However increased competition, changing demographics, and economic trends led to a steady decline in talented job applicants. I was hired to start up a new marketing office in the university’s centralized Office of Human Resources. After hiring a group of talented marketing professionals, our team set out to develop a new employer brand initiative, resulting in the $300,000 “Opportunities as Limitless as Penn State” campaign. With the launch of a new recruitment microsite, our page views increased 691% over the previous site and the average time individuals spent on the site doubled. We also were given a goal of helping Penn State achieve its diversity and inclusion goals, and we delivered – in just six months, Penn State saw a 17% increase in job applications from individuals in underrepresented minority groups.
