A ski instructor’s job is so much more than teaching people how to go left and right on snow. Part coach, part trainer, part psychologist, part motivational speaker, part concierge: An instructor plays many roles while also helping people have fun and safely enjoy the mountain experience as they develop the skills to become better skiers. The job description includes: big-picture analysis, team building, time management, risk management, process management, managing confrontation, group leadership and collaboration, effective debriefing, proactive coaching tailored to specific learning styles, creative innovation, fear mitigation and more. From wrangling a rowdy bunch of first-graders around the mountain in a blizzard to successfully teaching beginner-skiing fundamentals to a dozen Taiwanese computer engineers who don’t speak English, the daily challenges facing a ski instructor take many forms and present non-stop problem-solving opportunities. At Alpine Meadows I played all those roles and performed all those functions while teaching group and private lessons to adults and kids.

Working as a summer camp counselor over multiple years, one has the chance to develop strong relationships and truly see the impact of one has on campers.
