About Mark Burns, Ph.D.

I have a proven track record of successfully directing development teams, coordinating asset management from discovery, through IND-enabling toxicology/regulatory submissions, and early-stage clinical development. Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer of Aminex Therapeutics, Inc., developing a novel first-in-class oncology immunomodulator product (AMXT 1501 plus DFMO). Raised $31M from angel investors; collaborated with academic partners to win multiple million-dollar NIH grants; motivated and successfully managed CRO laboratories during GLP toxicology and GMP drug manufacturing outsourcing. Lead inventor and author on 19 issued US Patents and 28 scientific articles in leading journals.I founded Aminex Therapeutics by out-licensing the patents for AMXT 1501 from my former employer MediQuest Therapeutics. For this small molecule oncology immunomodulator asset, I led the financing (total $31M), IND-enabling toxicology, CMC drug substance and product manufacturing to allow successful FDA regulatory approval for first-in-human Phase 1, and follow-up Phase 1B/2A clinical testing in adult solid tumor patients. Led the design of clinical trials and writing of Protocols and Investigational Brochures. Facilitated parallel collaboration with academic consortium performing pediatric testing of AMXT 1501 plus DFMO.

    Us
Aminex Therapeutics, Inc. is developing AMXT 1501 plus DFMO as an immunomodulatory product for cancer treatment. AMXT 1501 plus DFMO works by removing a component from cancer cells that is critical for their growth and metastasis. Aminex discovered that depriving the tumor of this component induces a robust and durable immune response; allowing the immune system to recognize and attack the cancer and provide tumor-specific activity. AMXT 1501 plus DFMO represents an 'off-the-shelf' small molecule immunotherapeutic approach. Aminex’s hopes transform the way cancer is treated.
  • Mediquest Therapeutics, Inc.
    Executive Director Of Chemistry
Mediquest Therapeutics, Inc. Oct 1996 - Oct 2008
During my tenure at MediQuest Therapeutics, I greatly expanded the company's pipeline by discovering, and optimizing a variety of small molecule therapies for cancer, sepsis and skin disorders. I managed the laboratory activities of associate chemists together with maintaining a variety of laboratory instruments. As demonstrated by my very productive record of accomplishments, including 15 issued US patents, 21 scientific journal articles and two funded collaborative federal grants I have the drive to get the job done.
  • Rice University
    Chemistry
    Rice University Oct 1993 - Oct 1996
During my post-doc position at Rice Univerisity I was able to gain a great deal of experience performing bioorganic research. I was able to devise and carry out several 10-step complex organic synthesis routes using carbohydrate and phosphate chemistry to prepare molecules that enabled characterization of several important enzymes involved in nucleoside biosynthesis. An especially important contribution I made was providing a carbocyclic PRPP analog with which to view the catalytic activity of the PRPP transferase enzyme family.
