As Chief Executive and Responsible Officer my role was to steer the organisation through a complex education policy and regulatory environment. Key activities include:• Redevelopment of all A levels and the coordination of HE input and personal involvement in the Mark Smith review• Redevelopment of all GCSEs including in particular English and Maths with detailed negotiations with the regulator and DfE• Redevelopment of key vocational qualifications. PrincipalOaklands College Aug 2005 - Oct 2010Hertfordshire, Uk, GbAs Principal and Chief Executive of Oaklands College I had overall responsibility for advising on the strategic direction and delivering the goals of the organisation. Oaklands College is a large General Further Education College delivering in nearly all vocational areas (including land based) working with many partners including the University (in a consortium agreement with University of Hertfordshire to deliver HND / Foundation Degrees), local schools (900 14 – 16 year olds attend the college and large number of 16 – 19 year olds from schools – as well as the college’s 300 A level students, 10 Diploma lines), local authorities, independent providers and many employers. When I joined in 2005 Oaklands College had been classified as unsatisfactory and one of the worst colleges in the Country. In summary, the early years at Oaklands were about sorting out the fundamentals and ensuring a solid foundation. later the focus was on embedding a culture of a good college providing a solid foundation for moving to excellent. Over my time at the college there was a significant change in the structure, volume of delivery (16 -19 has increased by almost 100% to 3500 learners) and success rates (currently 80% for 16 – 19 improving every year from 55%). The college has 1000 staff and a turnover of roughly £33m. As well as 3500 16 -19 year olds we had roughly 400 HE learners, 4000 adults, 900 14 – 16 year olds and run a nursery provision from 6 months to 5 year olds. We also have a small number of students in residential accommodation. Our courses range from pre-entry to Higher Education and cover every sector as well as a full offer of A levels. -
