Data Raconteur (dādə raˌkänˈtər), n. a person who is masterful at using data to tell a story; a 21st century storyteller. I have a passion for digging into complex, messy data sets and extracting a compelling story that can have significant social or business impacts. As a student of data science, I have pursued this passion through projects which I have used to test my skills, push my creativity, and grow as a data scientist. A quick sample of the projects I have been involved in:Mass Property Appraisal in Pierce County: An applied machine learning approach• Used k-means clustering and random forest regression to conduct automated mass appraisals for single family properties in Pierce County, WA.• A demonstrated 7% reduction in the 2018 error rate was found to result in ~$880,000 in additional tax revenue and $150,000 less in overpayments by tax payers.Marketing Attribution Project• Implemented a statistical multi-touch attribution model based on Markov Chains in order to more accurately attribute customer conversions to the proper channels.• By mapping the customer journey and then running a Markov attribution model we discovered the sales and marketing distributions required rebalancing in order to increase ROI.In these projects I was able to apply both traditional machine learning models as well as more complex statistical models in order to address a business problem. With all of the tools currently available to data scientists it is important to take the time to find the best model for a given problem. As any data raconteur knows, every story needs a beginning (exploratory data analysis), middle (statistical modeling/machine learning) and end (business recommendations).
