About Mark Rykoff
I am an Emmy-winning photo editor based in Brooklyn, New York, who believes in the story-telling power of still photography. I commission, curate, research and produce documentary, journalistic and other narrative content for both digital and print, combining photography with text, sound, video and graphics. I work well in complex organizations and enjoy the challenges of a fast-paced, multitasking environment. I supervise personnel, manage budgets, negotiate licensing agreements, and craft layouts and page designs. I maintain relationships with many photographers, editors, writers, videographers, multi-media developers and licensing agents. Before working at Al Jazeera America, I spent most of my career at TIME magazine, where I began in the Moscow bureau - I speak excellent Russian and have a deep familiarity with the countries of the former Soviet Union. When I returned to New York I worked at the magazine headquarters in New York, where I used my story-telling skills at the magazine website, producing slideshows and videos on politics, conflict, entertainment and more. One of the videos, about the story behind Anthony Suau's iconic photo of the fall of the Berlin Wall, was honored with a News and Documentary Emmy. I have also worked at photo agencies and managed the photography and editorial operations for a number of award-winning books, including The Human Face of Big Data and A Day in the Life of China. I currently work on the New York photo desk for the website of Britain's Daily Mail.
