Mark has been a strong contributor to our team across a wide spectrum of responsibilities. On the machine learning side, he independently developed an individual-aware autocompletion system for "physician orders" (things like prescriptions or lab orders, which are usually dramatically under-specified by "doctor shorthand"). And, at the time layoffs hit, he was our vanguard for moving our team toward general purpose large language models (LLMs) for information extraction. I was really angry to lose him from that effort. But the niche that Mark really carved out for himself on our team was in driving team standards and training for software engineering. Many of our Data Scientists don't come through a "traditional CS" background - we have population health folks, mechanical engineers, econometricists, astrophysicists, etc. They're excellent with data and controlled experiments, but more sketchy on software engineering and developing clean, scalable, maintainable, algorithmically effective code. Mark took charge of improving this state of affairs. From his earliest time on the team, he found opportunities to improve the state of our software. His first action was to re-architect and rebuild the structure of our code repository to create cleaner separations, cleaner APIs, clear code ownership, and scalable dependency management. Then he took charge of our security posture as our "security champion", coordinating with athena InfoSec and cat herding our team into improving implementation security. Next he spun up a series of design review sessions to get people thinking more about design and doing design earlier in the process. Finally, he took over as lead of our team's internal training group, laying out a good course of ongoing education around software design. Overall, he's been a strong contributor and I'm sorry to lose him from our team. I should also say a word about athena's layoffs. All the decision-making was handled above my level and above the level of Mark's manager and director. None of us were asked for input in the process. The executive leadership who did make the decisions have been quite closed lipped about the decision making, so I have little insight on why Mark was chosen. I can, however, say that I strongly disagree with some of the decisions that were made. In closing, I'm happy to recommend Mark. Thank you."
