Senior Software Engineer

Seattle, Washington, Us

Dec 2016 - Jul 2024

Senior Software Engineer

Redmond, Washington, Us

Moved to Windows Phone CXE group, which worked with OEMs and Mobile Operator to ship phones, addressing MO-crucial issues & adding MO-required features to Windows Phone OS. Created test framework & automation for mobile app that enabled collection of system & debug logs from retail-locked phones (used by OEMs and MOs in test labs). Using SQL (for queries & initial data processing), and Telerik Kendo UI (HTML5 data visualization) with inline Javascript (additional data processing), consumed telemetry data from the above app & WinPhone Battery app to answer business questions posed by my team & I; this helped us learn about where & how our products were actually being used, determine which feature areas needed more attention, and learn about any bugs affecting our users that were not caught during testing. Implemented product feature in new Battery control panel for Windows 10 Mobile (for feature parity with WinPhone 8.1's Battery app), as main product feature team lacked time/resources to implement it. Added OneDrive support to another Windows Phone app owned by our team, to open up scenarios not yet supported by the app; leveraged OneDrive's REST API, and made app much more asynchronous to improve overall performance and lessen impact of network latency & bandwidth. Researched high-priority issue affecting a customer's Windows Phone deployment scenario, and designed/implemented fix with quick turnaround, with no code additions/changes (far lower chance of introducing new bugs). Continued providing guidance to peers, including software design, parallelism/concurrency, and SQL queries / JavaScript / Telerik Kendo UI (to select, process, and visualize data better).

Jun 2013 - Dec 2016

Senior Software Developer In Test

Redmond, Washington, Us

Moved to Windows Phone division, BSP Test team. Delivered tools that communicated with factory-level Qualcomm interfaces (i.e., when acting as OEM-specific USB endpoints); this simplified (and allowed automation of) tasks performed by individuals, and simplified device monitoring & recovery efforts in a lab containing several hundred devices. Validated firmware updates from Qualcomm before releasing them to the rest of the organization, including managing two mini-labs of devices in my office; additional QA efforts ranged down to validation & debugging of low-level drivers and firmware directive tables. Shipped Windows Phone 7, WP 7.1 & 7.5 (feature updates), and WP 8 (rearchitected upon desktop Windows 8 kernel). As before, provided guidance to peers in my team & other teams, answering technical questions (or leading them to solve it themselves, as a teaching moment) regarding software design, testing, security, and debugging.

Mar 2010 - May 2013

Technical Lead (Sde/T 2)

Redmond, Washington, Us

Senior technical lead, with partial focus on security. Peer to SDE/T team Leads. Provided guidance regarding new programming languages to counterparts in Development, security & investigative assistance to counterparts in Project Management, and guidance on all of the above, software design, testing, and security, to peer SDE/T Leads' teams. Developed QA tools to investigate potential issues brought up by Development team. Active member of cross-team group of senior SDE/Ts working to improve engineering efficacy of encompassing organization.

Jan 2006 - Mar 2010

Software Development Engineer (On Temporary Loan)

Redmond, Washington, Us

Asked by peer Development organization to temporarily take on product SDE role in my current component area, implementing two important features that otherwise wouldn't fit into their development schedule. Refined the design with Development & Project Management counterparts from both my group & the component group requesting the new features, worked independently to implement the features, and delivered the new features on time.

Oct 2005 - Dec 2005

Software Development Lead

Redmond, Washington, Us

Promoted to SDE Lead of same team, delivering test tools & automation for Network Access Protection service. Managed team budgets; coordinated hiring of contract SDE/Ts; planned, scheduled, and drove delivery of all projects in my team's area of ownership; and, helped team individuals develop in their career, including giving opportunities & guidance to a team member to help him grow into a star performer that earned two promotions in 12 months (not common).

Sep 2004 - Oct 2005

Sde/T And Sde

Redmond, Washington, Us

Held multiple positions spanning STE (testing / QA), SDE/T (Test-oriented development), and SDE (development), working on Windows OS client & server components including TFTP, Telnet, SNMP, DHCP, and IAS (RADIUS / authentication service). Created test plans & test automation, contributed to efforts to improve team's overall coding practices & skills (bringing the useful ideas to my later teams), created tools & scripts as needed to simplify other work (e.g., greatly facilitating readability of code coverage analysis reports, which also ended up helping other teams' managers), and so forth.
