Colleagues describe him as "Mark was one of the first artist I met at Zenimax Online Studios and I can honestly say it has been both a pleasure and an honour to have worked with him. His tenacity and resourcefulness made him a force of nature in the studio. His willing attitude made him an asset for the different teams and his troubleshooting skills made technical issues easier to overcome. He has a strong artistic eye and a humour that made the work place fun in times of stress. I would easily recommend him and hope to work with him again in the future.", "I had the pleasure of working under mark for the Elder Scrolls Online game. Mark is the type of lead who respects your time. He understands that you have a life outside of work and never makes you feel awkward when "life" happens. He also strives to create schedules that are realistic and never has that "we can always crunch if we need to" type of attitude that is all too common in the game industry.", and "I have had the pleasure to have Mark as my lead on Elder Scrolls Online for 4.5 years. He made it very easy for me to get into the very complicated character art pipeline at Zenimax and allowed me the freedom and help to grow as an artist, and later, as a manager. I have learned great many things from Mark: artistic, technical and people skills as well. Mark is one of the best art managers I have ever worked with. He understands the needs of individual artists on his team, as well the needs of the project and facilitates top-notch performance. Mark's technical knowledge of the inner workings of computer games is mind blowing. I highly recommend him as a fellow character artist and as a manager."

Lead Character ArtistZenimax Online Studios Jan 2008 - Feb 2015Hunt Valley, Maryland, Us- Built a team of talented character artists from the ground up and lead them through shipping ESO on four platforms. - Managed all aspects of the team's employment including hiring, discipline, scheduling/planning/tracking assets, performance reviews, career growth/advancement, and art direction. Very low turnover rate. - Directed the creation of nearly 200 unique armor sets and costumes, over 1000 weapons, and over 100 unique monsters. Currently 15 artists with over 2 dozen external contractors. - Worked with the Outsource Manager to generate guidelines and working scenes and reviewed all outsourced assets as they were submitted. - Designed most of the character-specific systems, and corresponding art pipelines and tools, and worked with engineers and tech artists to implement. Including: - Modular character system with 14 races and 2 genders. The system made it trivial to add new races and all armors/costumes/weapons would automatically work. - All of the functionality for ESO’s Character Creator. - Real-time character deformation system that supports artist-authored, user-controlled body and face deformation via a dedicated skeleton. - Compositing system with a predefined atlas that supports all characters being able to wear any costume without the need for additional art assets. Resulting composited characters were 1 draw call each. Designed and oversaw the creation of all tools needed to facilitate artists ability to easily work with this system. - Character tinting/dyeing system that works with all armor, costumes, and weapons, supports full material changes via modulating diffuse color, specular color, glossiness, Fresnel, and glow. Created a library of Photoshop actions to facilitate an efficient workflow for artists to correctly author assets to function with this system. - Created the pipeline for authoring monsters and oversaw relevant tools production. -

Senior ArtistDreamforge Intertainment Sep 1999 - Mar 2001I worked on two ill fated projects while at DreamForge Intertainment, Myst IV and Legend of the Sun. It's a bitter reality in the video game industry that everyone learns sooner or later, that sometimes you give your sweat and soul to a project and that's still not enough to make it onto the shelves of Walmart. I'm still proud of the work that our team accomplished while I was there (even if no one will ever see it), and many of us went on to Firaxis. So I guess in the end, the legacy and the experience are the reward, and that's enough for me.
