I'm an author, most recently of a YA novel called The Headmasters (Shadowpaw Press) as well as four nonfiction books, 50+ articles for Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture (University of California Press), and 100+ columns for CBC Radio One. Regarding my 2024 novel The Headmasters, the renowned sci-fi author Robert Sawyer has said this: “Mark Morton’s The Headmasters is a brilliant science-fiction debut from one of Canada’s best-loved nonfiction writers, with intricate world-building, a great science-fiction puzzle, and — ironic for a novel about suppressed memories — a main character you’ll never forget. I loved it.” — Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo Award-winning author of The DownloadedMy nonfiction books include Cupboard Love (about the origins and histories of food and culinary words); The Lover's Tongue (about the origins and histories of love and sex words), which was republished in the UK as Dirty Words; Cooking with Shakespeare (a cultural history of food in the sixteenth century); and The End (a history of how people at the ends of previous centuries responded to the end of their centuries). After compleing my PhD in Early Modern Literature at the University of Toronto in 1992, I taught at the University of Winnipeg for twelve years and then moved to the University of Waterloo.
