I concentrate my practice on white collar criminal defense and civil False Claims Act defense, including health care and criminal antitrust matters. As part of my practice I regularly conduct internal investigations for companies. Before joining Alston & Bird, I served as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina from 1994 to 2001. During my time with the Department of Justice, I served as Chair of the Attorney General's Advisory Committee of United States Attorneys, and I also served as Director of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys. As Director of EOUSA, I was responsible for the support and oversight of all 93 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, and played a key role in management and policy implementation for the Department of Justice. In 2001, Attorney General Janet Reno awarded me the Edmund J. Randolph Award for outstanding service to the Department of Justice. I am listed in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, The Best Lawyers in America© since 2005 and North Carolina Super Lawyers magazine since 2006.
