At Autodesk Research , we are responsible for reducing risk and accelerating innovation for Autodesk's products and customers. As part of Industry Futures, my role is to look outside the company to discover future industry problems, explore possible solutions and apply what we learn across industries. We demonstrate and refine our work via prototypes and cross-product workflows directly with customers in order to accelerate the design, engineering, construction, manufacturing and entertainment industries. In 2013 we initiated Project Dreamcatcher, an exploration into new design and manufacturing capabilities. This included developing IP for 3D printing in metal, novel user interfaces and other scientific investigations into new relevant technologies. Over the last five years, our team has incubated explorations in AI, robotics and generative design into one of the key strategic initiatives for the company, with customer-driven pilot projects with DARPA, Mercedes Formula One, NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab and renowned product designer Philippe Starck. This generative technology is now integrated into Fusion360. #makeanything

As the first Director of UXD at Autodesk and with my leadership experience at Palm, I established a global user-centered design practice that introduced user research, interaction and visual design. I built a single design organization across San Francisco, Manchester, Singapore and Shanghai. I was the sole UXD owner for a three year cross-company initiative to enable data interoperability, visual fidelity and user interface consistency across the hero portfolio of products: AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit and Max. This had a profound impact on our engineering centric culture and changed the way we design and develop products. In 2010, I was promoted to lead UXD and the customer experience for Autodesk Suites, the principle source of revenue for Autodesk. My UXD team also developed Autodesk’s first cloud services, creating new subscription value including a 30% y/y increase in revenue. This positioned both Autodesk and our customers for the future of design and manufacturing.

While at Palm, I built and led the human interface design team for all software programs. Awarded by executive staff for contributions on key product introductions, I established key relationships and introduced an outsourcing model for user research, interaction and graphic design, growing the team to over thirty designers. My UXD team pioneered the first PDA implementations for color, bluetooth, WiFi, cameras, music, one-handed navigation and telephones into the Palm user experience. I am the lead inventor on twelve patents that went into twenty new commercially released PDA’s and smartphones, including the award-winning Treo 650. I left two years before the iPhone was released to pursue a opportunity with Autodesk in San Francisco.

I came to MetaDesign during the .com boom to build a new UXD team to deliver on experiences outside of MetaDesign's core competencies in branding and web design. I created a design strategy for “emerging technologies” and built a world-class team of designers, information architects, editors and technologists to deliver new user experiences for set-top boxes, game consoles and hybrid devices. My clients included Excite@Home, AT&T, LG Electronics, Microsoft, Sony, Palm and Netflix. After executing on a future vision project involving PDA's, I left MetaDesign to join Palm in Silicon Valley.
