Research assistant:Led the controls team in commissioning a prototype dual axis solar tracker for PV panels. I set up a SCADA system using an ICP DAS programmable automation controller and investigated whether ZigBee technology was suitable for our communications requirements (it was not). I found appropriate equations for tracking the sun and programmed algorithms that fit the limitations of our micro-controller. I evaluated various sensors and programs used for home automation and energy monitoring, recommending the TED dashboard as the best solution for our needs.I designed data monitoring and analysis software to evaluate net-zero energy lighting solutions.Peer Leader:As a part of the student success team at GBC I ran weekly drop-in workshops for students looking to improve their grades in math, physics, and blueprint reading.Peer Tutor:Helped students, some with disabilities, in math, ESL, English, physics, AutoCAD, electronics, pneumatics, and machining.

I was the interim president, rebuilding, recruiting, training, and motivating the executive team and local committee. I represented AIESEC Queen’s in the Kingston community, building networks of support for our goal of helping youth develop into culturally aware leaders. This involved executing on recruitment and marketing plans, improving sales call volume and personally closing enough deals to meet our targets, training new executive team members, culturally integrating new members and exchangers, providing marketing, logistical, and HR support for a regional conference, and leading strategic meetings on developing our annual business plan.

Tested a new approach to determine phase transformations using thin film sodium niobate. If you shine light on ice, water, and steam you will get vastly different reflections from each; we used this principle to test when sodium niobate changes phases (it has a few more solid phases). Sodium niobate is a material that might replace a lead-based one in certain capacitors and could be used in high-speed RAM. We had mountains on data from this one experiment, and my job was to process it as there were many interactions to take into account.Used Atomic Force Microscopy to determine effectiveness of different deposition techniques. I operated the AFM machine, a task requiring attention to detail because the sensors are expensive and easily broken if the surface is rough and not corrected for.
