Team lead of the Quantum Flow Processor (QFP) driver and diagnostics team for the ASR1000 router. In charge of bringing up the latest generation of this network processor, including adapting the low level data path code to the new device.• Successfully initialized QFP network processor on 3 different boards in diagnostics and production environment.• Designed and implemented end-to-end workflow to automatically program registers based on machine-readable chip properties in Verilog. • Implemented exception handler code for new Xtensa core in hand-crafted assembler.• Ported assembler code for instruction tracing and profiling to enable performance analysis.• Optimized cache flushing code to speed up stateful features by 2x .• Provided ASIC expertise to IPsec team to improve throughput by 50% .• Developed the virtual memory map to cover one, two and four-chip clusters.• Implemented extended memory addressing scheme to expand 32-bit addressability from 3GB to 12GB and then to 64GB.• Provided performance modeling, analysis and improvement of packet forwarding code in Xtensa core to reach 80 Mpackets/sec. • Guided team in all technical bring-up activities, including partitioning, design, implementation, coding conventions, debugging, unit testing and cross-functional communication.

Modeled, designed and simulated the packet processing and infrastructure code of the QFP network processor and worked with the cross functional team to drive the ASIC requirements to closure.• Operated as the software team’s point of contact for all aspects of the new chip’s performance, compatibility and serviceability features. • Ported and extended the performance analysis tool of the existing chip to provide a platform to model the new chip.• Analyzed existing software to extract metrics on instruction counts and I/O operations.• Redirected the team to take ownership of the packet processing software, which was unstaffed at that point.• Ported the software simulator infrastructure to cover the new chip and tracked nightly runs to measure feature completeness.• Implemented the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) of the packet processing code for the new chip to run simulations.• Identified performance problem areas in HAL and contributed to improvements to reach the target.

Developed the modular driver infrastructure for the new QFP ASIC for the ASR1000 data path. Expanded that software later on to support new QFP variants and to cover other (non-QFP) forwarding engines. • Implemented object-oriented driver framework in C to speed up new hardware bringup. • Worked with ASIC design team to define machine readable register definitions and auto-generate driver software, completely eliminating certain classes of coding errors. • Designed and implemented tools for troubleshooting and new hardware bringup as well as performance analysis. • Refactored code to enable maximal sharing of common code across ASR1000, ISR and CSR1000v platform portfolios. • Expanded memory model to support multiple types of memory allocations with full backwards compatibility.
