I am Markus Wahl, a historian and research fellow with over six years of experience in studying modern Central European and medical history. I work at the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany, where I investigate the experiences of patients with alcohol addiction, diabetes, or sexually transmitted diseases in the socialist healthcare system of the German Democratic Republic.My research interests include social history of medicine, memory and addiction studies, sexual health, and broader studies of health and society in the past and worldwide. In 2017, I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Kent in the United Kingdom, where I exposed the continuity and break between the political systems regarding medical personnel, concepts, stigmatization, language, and symbols. I have published my findings in peer-reviewed journals and books, and received multiple awards and grants for my work. I am passionate about exploring the intersections of history, medicine, and ethics, and engaging in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue.
