Research on genetic erosion of crops: Using meta analytical techniques diversity trends in released cultivars in the last century were studied. A critical review of the concept and definition of genetic erosion in crops has been prepared. Genetic erosion in lettuce cultivars was studied using molecular techniques and historic seed catalogues. Also involved with the "Kennisbank Plantaardige Bronnen", a knowledge base, in Dutch, on plant genetic resources which is part of "Groen Kennisnet".Participant in a bilateral project with China on Access and Benefit Sharing of plant genetic resources, and involved in a project on climate change in relation to on farm conservation with partners in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and Indonesia.

Research on genetic diversity patterns of Deschampsia antarctica. Historical colonization patterns were investigated by sequencing chloroplast DNA fragments obtained from both herbarium material and locally collected samples. AFLP analysis was used for investigating patterns of diversity in (meta)populations of D. antarctica and its dispersal. Plants were also grown in a cold chamber to observe the phenotypic plasticity. Field work and collecting expeditions on the Falklands Islands, with the British Antarctic Survey in the Antarctic Peninsula area and with the French Antarctic programme in the Crozet Archipelago have been carried out. Travel grant awarded by the Dutch Science Foundation (NWO).

Research on ecogeography, diversity and taxonomy of Vicia ser Vicia, which includes common Vetch and related species:• A study of the taxonomy and phylogeny of Vicia sativa and related species, using both morphological data and DNA fingerprinting techniques (AFLPs), resulting in a novel classification and taxonomic keys.• A study of the geographic patterns of genetic and taxon diversity within the Vicia sativa aggregate using molecular techniques. • An ecogeographic study of the Vicia sativa aggregate using a combination of passport data and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. • An agro-morphological assessment of useful variation in a collection of Vicia sativa. • Recommendations for an appropriate conservation strategy of the Vicia sativa aggregate.

Responsible for the regeneration and characterisation of the ILRI forage genebank collection. Coordination of three seed multiplication sites in different agro-ecological zones. Supervision of around 50 long-term staff and administration of two sites. Management of the field genebanks, the databases ,the short-term seed store and dispatch of seeds. Supervision of several undergraduate students and organisation of three group courses on forage seed production. Research activities: • Observation methods for morphological characterisation of forages.• Agromorphological characterisation of Napier grass, Buffel grass and perennial Panicum sp. • The effect of threshing methods on storage life of seeds of Chloris gayana and Pennisetum polystachyum.• Collaborative research with the feed utilisation program on browse legumes.
