Engineer Without Borders’s Junior Fellows work at the intersection of poverty, systemic change, innovation, and education - gaining unique experience and valuable insight on development.The Junior Fellowship Program is designed to go beyond the development of leadership skills - it’s designed to help young people become leaders. The Fellowship begins in Canada with six months of preparation in an advanced and immersive learning environment, followed by four months of individually leading change in Africa with one of EWB’s African Ventures. Upon return, Fellows continue their work with eight months of leadership in Canada, bringing their experiences and learning back home, and tapping into EWB’s national network of young social innovators.

Business Development Services Africa (BDSA) is an independent venture funded by Engineers Without Borders Canada and delivers management and technical advice to actors in the Small & Growing Business Sector, including incubators, agri-businesses, start-ups and investors. Our mandate is to leverage capital and innovative ideas to develop a self-reliant and sustainable form of poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa for SMEs, smallholder farmers, and their communities.• Provided business, financial, capacity-building and technical assistance consultation to Zambian businesses of various growth-stages, as well as to farmer cooperatives and farmer clusters, at a local business incubator • Created and implemented a monitoring and evaluation system for businesses, start-ups, and the business incubator itself in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of interventions and to attract investment • Collaborated with aid organisations, investors, and government agencies to create new models of funding for African agribusinesses by addressing the systemic difficulties facing enterprises in acquiring investment• Built a due diligence system for Zambian businesses entering into the business incubator’s incubation program, ensuring those businesses with the highest potential for growth and social impact were selected • Coached entrepreneurs on their business models and connected them with strategic partners and mentors to encourage realistic growth in order to attract investment from banks, grant funders, impact investors, and microfinance institutions• Managed a CSR policy for the construction of community-lead educational initiatives throughout rural Zambia in which 6 new schools were constructed; tracked spending, created budgets and streamlined cost control
