Similar to prior roles, I am overseeing the development of a research IT infrastructure capable of supporting the information needs of the research community of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. Central to the infrastructure is T'PAU, the Temple Population Access Utility, a database created through the integration of inpatient and ambulatory data drawn from our EHR and administrative systems. The infrastructure supports our successful collaboration with Penn State, Pittsburgh/UPMC and Johns Hopkins on the PaTH Network, a PCORI-funded Clinical Data Research Network.

I am leading the clinical aspects of our Epic inpatient implementation within a complex academic medical center, collaborating with clinicians and the Epic build team to understand the impact of critical design choices on workflow and to consider where workflow enhancements, associated policy changes and more challenging consensus may be required. I am overseeing the build processes related to order set design and clinical documentation templates, balancing the needs and expectations of physicians with regulatory and billing requirements, core measures, and meaningful use. Beyond the basic functional capabilities of the EHR, I have brought focus to many of the real-world pragmatic issues in using our EHR to manage a large patient panel, and communicating across physician and nursing teams to optimize patient care.

With my domain expertise across informatics, clinical medicine and clinical research, I fostered more data driven decision-making within AZ through the development of a Real World Evidence strategy with respect to clinical trials planning (eg assessment of baseline event rates in different subpopulations to refine power analyses), observational analyses of exposures and outcomes, investigation into the effectiveness of existing therapies, and analyses of alterations to study inclusion criteria on recruitment numbers and expected impact on outcome-- all with the goal of reducing the cost, and increasing the likelihood of success of clinical trials. I also was responsible for developing and managing the strategic relationship with external data vendors. I worked to ensure AZ achieved value from these relationships through the alignment of information needs of the clinical research and payer evidence groups within AZ with vendor-supplied clinical and administrative data and associated analytical resources.

My informatics and clinical research career grew out of my NLM informatics fellowship project, “A Health Services Research Workstation.” The data organization underlying that project formed the basis of PICARD, the Pennsylvania Integrated Clinical and Administrative Research Database, Penn's first large scale research database consisting of data from previously-siloed clinical and administrative information systems. I also managed the use of this information resource to support numerous faculty research initiatives across a broad range of clinical disciplines, as well as conducting my own collaborative research to understand the relationship between exposures and outcomes, to develop new models of quality measurement, and to explore effectiveness of interventions designed to optimize value in healthcare.Among the initiatives that I am most proud, I was Penn’s main informatics representative on the CTSA initiative, and was elected to the steering committee of the informatics key function committee. With my clinical domain expertise and experience organizing and applying clinical data to research projects, I was selected to be the data core co-chair of the FDA mini-Sentinel project where, working with co-chair Lesley Curtis and a diverse set of insurance industry partners, we developed a common data model shared across the network. I was also the co-chief of the biostatistics and informatics core of the VA Center for Health Equity and Promotion (CHERP), a shared research endeavor between the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia VA Medical Centers, and developed the VALOR (VA Longitudinal Online Research) database that compiled data from the VISN4 network prior to the creation of a national data warehouse through the VINCI project. I also developed and ran a popular “Frontiers” course in clinical informatics for 4th year medical students.
