Symbod manufactured synthetic musculoskeletal training devices for education, training, and industry. I co-founded this company because these hyper-realistic devices provided a safer option to cadavers that could be used anywhere without special protection. In addition, I have always had a strong interest in training starting in the army and especially in professional environments like graduate medical education. After building a lab and manufacturing facility in the US, we donated the technology to teaching institutions that still use it today. As a leader, I brought on good people and let them do their jobs.

The reason we started eTrauma was to develop an information-based imaging and EMR product that helped orthopaedic surgeons and providers do their job more effectively and we saw that digital information was clearly superior to the traditional methods of film and paper. I learned in the army that all information has value. While in the ground and air cavalry, we had one main job, to see and report. Xrays are visual reports from the body. By helping doctors go digital in their clinics we enabled them to see more of that report and thus make better decisions. I think we had a profound impact on patient care by giving doctors more access to visual information through our digital technology. Our team developed a proprietary image management and viewing software called OfficePACS. The industry term for digital imagery is Picture Archive and Communications Systems (PACS).Bringing a new product to market is a challenge. I created a sales network and grew sales to 20M in three years. The product became #1 in the industry. eTrauma was sold to Stryker Corporation in 2005.

OrthoLogic Corp (now doing business as Capstone Therapeutics) is a biotechnology company committed to developing a pipeline of novel therapeutic peptides aimed at helping patients with under-served medical conditions. I joined them as a regional sales manager and a year later was promoted to Director of Sales. In three years, I grew the dealer network and sales from 2.8M to 29M. I did this by hiring the best ortho dealers, training their people to deliver our message in one minute to busy doctors, and leading the best sales management team in the business to give their best every month.

EBI designs, manufactures, and markets products used by orthopedic medical specialists in surgical and non-surgical therapy. They brought me onboard to strengthen their sales in the SE and Georgia. My territory became the #1 territory and #1 sellers in bone growth stimulators and Orthofix external fixation in 1992.

After training a top performing orthopaedic sales team at J&J Ortho, my entrepreneurial spirit saw an opportunity to help other growing medical device companies recruit staff. I founded Med Rep News Inc. We recruited sales and marketing talent primarily in the orthopaedic industry. In addition to recruiting, we also published MedRepNews, a monthly newsletter for medical device sales and marketing professionals. The business was sold in 1990.

J&J Orthopaedics hired me to manage four states for casting products and early total joint sales. While working with J&J, I invented and developed a device called the Cementrifuge that J&J purchased and brought to market. While growing my territory, I continued to expand my knowledge in healthcare and medical devices. After being inducted into the prestigious Ring Club, I was promoted to sales trainer.

My first position after my US Army service. Stryker was starting their first surgical sales force. I sold orthopedic power equipment for the emergency room. It was a great introduction to healthcare and the needs of hospitals, clinics and surgeons. Stryker has grown into one of the world’s leading medical technology companies, offering innovative products and services in Orthopaedics, Medical and Surgical Equipment, Neurotechnology and Spine.

The army was an 11-year experience where I met great people and learned that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. I started at 19, celebrated my 21st birthday in Saigon, went back to college, got commissioned, went to flight school, and got to be part of the 1st Infantry and 1st Armor Divisions in the US and in Germany. Along the way, I promised myself to be grateful every morning and to avoid cynics and pessimists.Leadership was my favorite school in the military and my most enduring lesson. My favorite jobs were scout platoon leader and air cavalry platoon leader. I am still in awe and grateful of those that dedicate their lives to the military.
