About Mark Young

I’ve had a rewarding 27+ year career developing and delivering innovative new technology and business solutions - from the very first mobile applications, to gaming and infotainment, to the advent of digital agriculture, land management and recreation, and now the agricultural value chain. I love leading teams who are mission driven and passionate about what they do, from the product designer to the software architect and everyone in between. As a technologist I’ve enjoyed an incredibly diverse career. At JavaSoft (inside Sun Microsystems), my team developed the first downloadable applications on a mobile phone. HipLogic, my startup, developed an embedded mobile platform very similar to what Android is today. At Zynga, we defined the metrics-driven business and hosted millions of simultaneous users along with the world’s largest analytics database. At Yahoo, my focus was user experience and strategy across the mobile application portfolio. At Climate, we defined the future of modern agriculture, integrating IOT, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence to bring food production into the modern technological era. LandTrust is bringing the outdoor recreation market together with technology, data, and various partners to improve land management and further wildlife conservation while improving the profitability of farms and ranches. Now at Parcel.ag, we're disrupting the agricultural value chain by putting the farmer at the center of a new type of digital marketplace. While my background is technical, my unique ability is synthesizing business opportunity, product experience, and technical implementation into a cohesive business strategy. I’ve experienced many different stages of a company’s lifecycle, from venture backed startup, to acquihire, through IPO, to billion dollar acquisition and large global enterprise. Each has its own advantages and challenges, but having prior experience is always valuable to the team.

  • The Climate Corporation
    Head Of Product
The Climate Corporation Sep 2018 - Jul 2020
    St. Louis, Missouri, Us
In addition to my CTO responsibility, I was able to also serve as interim lead of the Product Team. I worked to transition the function from a group of individuals testing siloed concepts to a coordinated team with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. We worked to define global user segmentation, sound product development process, prototyping, user research and testing, and developed a cohesive multi-segment strategy for the most complicated digital product of my career. We put the "jobs to be done" framework into practice as we developed the second generation of the user experience, and we eventually recruited a "Top 50 under 50 Most Powerful Women in Technology" product leader to join and take over leadership of the team.
  • The Climate Corporation
    Chief Technology Officer
The Climate Corporation Mar 2015 - Jul 2020
    St. Louis, Missouri, Us
I joined Climate as CTO in early 2015 - just a few months after their near billion dollar acquisition. The company was a blend of acquired companies and businesses, with no product-market fit, no users to speak of, and no clear idea of what “digital agriculture” was going to mean to the industry. Since those early days, we defined the space, built the number one recognized brand in the industry, created a product used on over 100 million acres globally in over 20 countries, defined a platform with more than 60 ecosystem partners, and delivered the first examples of agronomic productivity driven by artificial intelligence and big data principles. We doubled the size of the company, and changed the culture from a startup mentality to a data-centric enterprise software company. My role was to help define and evangelize the vision and platform strategy, drive the architectural changes, and do everything in my power and experience to help the company through that transition. I helped drive sound engineering and product principles, recruit and retain top talent, and define and lead sound enterprise software processes. The last several years I also traveled extensively - speaking at industry events, customer gatherings, and media interviews all over the world. I’ve presented to government officials, published industry white papers, and helped drive the company’s profile and mission through social media.
  • Yahoo
    Director, Mobile Product Excellence
    Yahoo Oct 2014 - Feb 2015
    Sunnyvale, Ca, Us
Although most of the dot-com titans (Netscape, @Home, Excite, AltaVista, Sun Microsystems, ...) were gone, Yahoo was still standing in 2014. The company was at an interesting point in its lifecycle - as users shifted from desktops to mobile devices, the opportunity to redefine Yahoo's business came with it. My main function at Yahoo was to identify areas of the Mobile and Emerging Products group which when improved would add the greatest value to the organization. My first step was to provide a deep analysis on key in-market applications and offer insight from my experience across all aspects such as branding, user interface, interaction design, social media integration, and content virality. Next I assisted an effort to move to a faster analytics system to enable marketing to better understand the long term value of certain groups of users to aid in running effective CPI campaigns. Lastly, I offered the team insights for 2015 on what key strategic initiatives to make to unlock revenue that was being lost, start tracking unique users, cross promote across the user base, better manage application updates, and other key infrastructure services to allow for faster, more efficient growth.
  • Zynga
    Cto Mobile Technology
    Zynga Aug 2011 - Jun 2014
    San Francisco, California, Us
Zynga acquired my startup in 2011. We were an experienced group of mobile developers and like many companies, Zynga was trying to expand its business into mobile but had very little in-house expertise to do so. My time there was basically split into three phases. The first phase was about trying to infuse my knowledge and experience into the Zynga mobile organization. I started by pulling the entire mobile QA team (40+ people) out and having them report directly to me. We created a new automated testing team, device test lab, and slowly introduced automated testing to the game teams for native iOS and Android as well as OpenGL/ES.The second phase involved technology recommendations to the company for cross-platform / multi-platform development. Zynga fields games in nearly every type and genre: 2D, 3D, scrollers, runners, puzzlers, etc. In concert with another architect, we produced a technology matrix that enabled game teams to quickly evaluate several technologies and arrive at the one best suited for their game needs which minimized the effort required to reach multiple distribution platforms. The third phase of my time at Zynga came as the company flattened the mobile division and allowed all game teams across the company to develop mobile titles. In concert with PeopleOps, I developed curriculum for iOS and Android, as well as coordinated training for Unity across the company. In addition I both developed and instructed a three week boot camp for all new college graduate hires, teaching them a range of software engineering skills to ready them for game teams.
  • Hiplogic
    Founder & Cto
    Hiplogic 2005 - Aug 2011
    Fremont, Ca, Us
I founded HipLogic in 2005 after leaving Sun Microsystems, with the simple realization that mobile devices were capable of much more than we could accomplish with Java2ME. The vision was to create an always-on, multi-tasking application platform that was completely integrated with device capabilities and was easy to develop for. This pre-dated the advent of both the iPhone and Android. We were backed by Benchmark Capital and raised approximately $13MM through two rounds of funding. As CTO, I established the engineering team and culture, designed the product, and spent a lot of time flying around the world meeting with partners and customers. We worked with top carriers including SoftBank, Vodofone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile (DT), Telstra, Rogers, and deployed live trials with Cingular (now AT&T) in the U.S. We embedded our platform onto LG's WISE devices for distribution through Carphone Warehouse and developed pre-installed applications for Nokia. Our content partners included British Sky Broadcasting in the U.K., Associated Press, CBS (News & Sports), Disney, Facebook, Twitter, and numerous smaller content providers. I am incredibly proud of what we achieved at HipLogic. The product was (and still is) state of the art for feature phones and the engineering team and culture was the best I've ever had the pleasure of working with anywhere.
  • Sun Microsystems
    Staff Engineer
    Sun Microsystems Nov 1997 - Jul 2005
    Palo Alto, Ca, Us
My first task at Sun was to implement the global user registration scheme for Solaris, which was the very first screen every user in the world saw when they installed it. No pressure - it just had to work perfectly and look right in eight different languages.Next they turned me loose on even more important things in Solaris Software. As part of the workgroup server team, I helped deliver the 1.0 version of the Solaris Management Console (SMC) to help Sun better compete with Windows NT. After 1.0 failed to meet business expectations, I was given the opportunity to lead the team and start fresh. I architected and delivered what became the Solaris Management Console (SMC) 2.0 - a distributed remote management and system configuration framework for Solaris built in Java. The SMC 2.0 shipped with every version of Solaris and every team within Sun delivered their admin functions as part of the framework. It was featured in several reviews at the time with regard to its ease of configuration and a book was even published for it later in 2002.In 2000, I moved within Sun to Java Software to work in the wireless products division, just in time to join the launch of J2ME/MIDP 1.0. I worked for several years on the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) team, performing a range of duties including performance tuning, code analysis, and feature development. I spent a great deal of time with mobile usability experts and implemented several versions of UI toolkits, including a skinnable user interface engine that allowed java to be themed to look any way an OEM wanted - with much less porting effort and increased quality. As a senior member of the team, I was a co-lead for Java Specification Request 172 - Web Services and XML parsing for mobile devices. Leading an industry expert group to define API specifications was a great experience. I also gave talks at several JavaOne conferences, as well as Cingular's (now AT&T) developer conference as an industry expert.
  • Intranet Partners
    Engineer
    Intranet Partners May 1997 - Jul 1998
After graduating on a Tuesday, I drove out to Silicon Valley and started work immediately the following Monday as a web engineer for Intranet Partners (which later got absorbed into its parent company, Taos Mountain). Taos was a consulting house which placed employees in long term contracts during the dot-com boom of the late 90's.The web engineering skills I gained from a company I had started in college turned out to be very valuable in Silicon Valley. I first went to work at a global "broadband" gaming startup as their web engineer. I met a lot of skepticism at first being so young, but the web was brand new and experienced engineers didn't know much about it which gave me a great advantage early in my career. I did a lot of interesting things with CGI, designed database driven utilities to drive their global websites, and worked closely with the CEO to generate daily analytic reports about the business. The gaming startup eventually shuttered, as broadband didn't have enough penetration yet to make online gaming a viable business. From there I shifted gears and started a new contract at Sun Microsystems, who desperately needed Java developers for a variety of initiatives.
