About Mark Zobeck, Md, Mph

As a pediatric hematologist/oncologist, my job is to care for children with cancer and blood disorders and walk with these patients and their family through the nightmare of a cancer diagnosis. I seek not only to provide the most effective and well-researched treatments available to help cure a child of his or her disease, but also to support the family as they endure the gauntlet of the treatment process. Thankfully, in the United States more than 8 in 10 kids survive their disease! However, the 2 out of 10 kids who do not survive their disease is a tragedy. The childhood cancer community has made great progress toward effective treatments, but we have more work to do! I am proud to be a member of this community and work to bring about a day when no child dies of cancer. Unfortunately, that last sentence isn't the end of cancer's story. The survival statistics I quoted about 8 in 10 kids surviving is true only for high-income countries. In low-income or middle-income countries, survival statistics may be less than 10%! The cancer community's work in curing children of cancer will not be finished until every child, no matter where he or she was born, receives the life-saving treatments they need. The tragedy is that, while collectively the global medical communities knows how to cure most cancers, we don't know how to get the right treatment, in the right place, at the right time. Through my work with the Texas Children's Global HOPE (Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Excellence) program, I am studying how to implement tools from bioinformatics and data science in resource-constrained settings to improve the care provided to children with cancer and blood disorders around the world.

Listed skills include Pediatrics, Medicine, Public Health, Global Health, and 9 others.
