Profile bio

About Marla Ramirez

My current research investigates mixed legal status families whose parents and/or grandparent(s) are U.S. citizens of Mexican descent “repatriated” during the Great Depression era. I closely examine the legal and social ramifications on the experiences of the expatriates’ descendants with an explicit focus given to race, class, and gender forced migration experiences. Prior to my dissertation research, I earned an M.A. degree, also in the Chicana/o Studies M.A./Ph.D. program at UC, Santa Barbara (UCSB). My Master's thesis examines the experiences of undocumented immigrant youth, both college and non-college students through an oral history methodology. My B.A. degree is from the UC, Los Angeles (UCLA) in World English Literature with a Spanish minor. The innovatory nature of my current research along with its resonance with the current sociopolitical climate and immigration debates has drawn multiple invitations to present at different universities. My professional talks cover an array of national conferences, including the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association (2014), Harvard University’s Illegality, Youth, and Belonging Symposium (2013), Oral History Association (2013), and the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies (2012). Moreover, I also presented preliminary findings at the UC Berkeley’s (UCB) Regional Oral History Institute and at the UCSB’s Center for New Racial Studies (UCCNRS) colloquium series. Additionally, I have received funding from the Fletcher Jones/UC Office of the President's Dissertation Fellowship. I also received generous research grant from the UC Center for New Racial Studies. Additional funding has been granted by UCSB's Chicano Studies Institute, the Academic Senate, and the National Science Foundation. My research and teaching interests include: the U.S.-Mexico border; Mexican immigration, repatriation narratives, gendered migrations, oral history methodologies, and undocumented immigrant youth.

Listed skills include History, Public Speaking, Student Affairs, Community Outreach, and 18 others.
