Current• Created units and daily lesson plans for regular and advanced language arts classesbased on Rockwood curriculum and Common Core State Standards, includingintegrated reading and writing units. These units integrated fiction (in a variety ofgenres) and nonfiction. Responses to reading included narrative writing, constructedresponse, literary analysis using Beers' and Probst's “Notice & Note” strategy andnonfiction analysis using Lehman's close reading techniques, expository writing,research, and argument writing. Writing assignments employed the writing process,Culham's Traits of Writing, Schaffer's format for expository writing, and Hillocks'sapproach to argument writing. To address speaking and listening standards, unitsalso included Socratic seminars, debate, literature circles, and individual studentpresentation of projects.• Created and taught weekly character development lessons based on StephenCovey's Leader in Me program and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens• Worked collaboratively with other Language Arts teachers in a professional learningcommunity three times a week• Co-chaired the Student Lighthouse Committee, preparing student leaders to presentat Leadership Day, which showcased the school's character development initiativesto over 50 attendees from the Midwest Leader in Me Symposium• Presented a leadership showcase to Midwest Leader in Me Symposium visitors onstudent leadership and data collection using the online application, “Class Charts”• Served on the Building Leadership Team and the Safety and Discipline Committee• Served as team lead, helping to develop and implement student-led conferences• Created and sponsored a Disney club and a book club, and assisted with Fellowshipof Christian Athletes• Continued professional development through Lindenwood/Rockwood courses onclassroom management, integrating technology into instruction, the flippedclassroom, assessment for learning, engagement, and cultural responsiveness.
