When I entered the talent development field, I had no idea I would get to do so much interesting work. Armed with a master's in English lit and a passion for facilitation, I started my career as a trainer in a call center. Next came instructional design, leadership development, consulting, program management, communications, strategy work, and more. I've loved it all and have learned that I thrive when I have 2 things in my work: variety and big challenges. Anyone who has become a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach will tell you it’s a lengthy process...and "mastering" Strengths is definitely a big challenge.Back in 2014 when I was certified, the first step was to attend a five-day class. I attended in Omaha, Nebraska, the headquarters of CliftonStrengths (a.k.a., StrengthsFinder). We had homework every night. Lots of homework. And then? Well, after completing the course and the application process, you take a lengthy timed exam and coach 6 people on their CliftonStrengths results. Next, those 6 people must submit evaluations of your coaching skills to Gallup. Then, finally, IF you receive acceptable evaluation scores…congratulations! You’re a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach! For 2 years. To maintain your certification, you must demonstrate your mastery of CliftonStrengths via a recertification process every 2 years. It's different every time and always includes an exam - an exam that you only get 2 chances to pass. Full disclosure: I thought my first recertification would be a “gimme” so I skimmed the materials and took the exam. I failed. Gulp. Thankfully, I studied and passed on my second (and final) attempt. More full disclosure: I appreciate Gallup’s rigorous process. It means those of us who continue to be recertified are truly committed to helping people leverage their unique talents. Here are just a few things I've seen people experience after participating in the CliftonStrengths workshops/coaching sessions I've led: -Increased clarity about who you are (and who you are NOT)-Enhanced engagement at work (and in life)-A deeper understanding of the environments where your Strengths will flourish…and those where they'll languish-Noticeably improved team communication, collaboration, and productivity I've been a talent development professional since the 20th century, and I use CliftonStrengths to help individuals, leaders, and teams discover, lean into, and maximize their unique talents. Yes, that last sentence proudly includes the Oxford comma. Twice. ;)
